Do not have a remote

If this is a Hampton Bay fan, you probably can buy a suitable remote from a Hampton Bay dealer...BUT before rushing out to buy a remote, it would be a good idea to find out whether the reason this fan turned up at a yard sale is not that the remote receiver failed

Hampton Bay 54 In. Brushed Steel with Remote Model 55295 just stopped working and remote works with other fan so remote is fine. where is code on fan so i can check that and rule that out

Check on top of motor, there should be a small opening with four very small (DIP style) switches.
I presume the fan is installled, so you'll need a ladder to check that, please be safe. Remove the battery cover from your remote, you'll find four similar switches there too. Combination must be the same for the fan to work. Good luck!

The dip switches on the remote and on the fan have to match - which makes the remote and the fan on the same radio frequency so they can talk to each other. They all come with the same default setup of the dip switches (all in the "on" position and therefore they are all on the same radio frequency). That's fine unless there is a similar remote control fan nearby. So a remote might talk to several new fans if they are similar brand or same remote etc on the default dip switch settings and therefore same radio frequency. It's up to you to change the dip switches if you need to. You need to. They give you the ability to change the frequency so you don't control a similar fan down the hall, upstairs etc , while also controlling the one in the room that you intended to control ie your problem. As long as the remote and the fan match, they will talk to each other. So you have to change the dip switches on one of the remotes and the fan you are using that remote on to something different, but matching. There are usually four dip switches, usually all in the "on" position. So, for example, change the first dip switch to off on the remote and do the same to the fan - turn first dip switch off. You'll probably have to take the fan down and take off the top to get at the dip switches. That should fix the problem.

Remote Control Problem

I had this problem. One day everything worked. The next day the fan ran at 1 speed and the remote didn't turn on the light, change fan speed, nothing. I changed batteries on the remote - no good. As you should know, the dip switches on the remote and on the fan have to match - which makes the remote and the fan on the same radio frequency so they can talk to each other. (They let you change radio frequency so that you don't control a similar fan down the hall as well as the one in the room that you intended to control.) Anyway, come to find out from the fan guy at Home Depot that sometime the dip switches on the fan "fall" out of place leaving the remote unable to talk to the fan. Sounded crazy, but sure enough one of the dip switches on the fan wasn't tightly in place. Once all the dip switches were tightly in place (with the fan dip switches matching the remote dip switches) everything ran fine. To change the dip switches on my fan that meant uninstalling the fan from the ceiling and taking the big top cover off to expose the dip switches.
