Based off the fact that the car runs good when pushed I would say that you have a dead spot in the starter motor. These are typically swapped from the old motor onto the new motor so it is probably original. I've seen this quite a few times. If he installs a new starter motor the issue should be corrected. Based off what he already has invested in the car I would say it is certainly worth fixing. Hopefully he wont have any more problems after that. The starters typically run anywhere from $125-$175.
