Recommendation:
Make sure that java, direct X, and .NET components are up to date. Many installers not require these.

If the install just can't see the printer, I would completely uninstall any components you were able to get installed (if any), remove the device entirely from your system, download a Vista version of the driver from HP if possible, and run the setup.exe...If your using a system driver you'll have to hook the printer up first, otherwise when it asks you to attach the printer then hook it up in a different USB port.

If all else fails install the drive manually through the control panel using Add Harware and then browse for the INF file.

Reasons

1. Downloading the driver gets you the newest version available and may resolve a bug.
2. Changing the USB port will keep Windows from using the pre-configured settings set up in previuos installs.
3. Installing manually will add the printer to the device library, even if you have to reinstall it a second time to get the USB configuration right
