I just bought a Powermac G5, and cannot find any mechanical or non-mechanical way to open the CD/DVD drive so I can put new software onto my computer. I thought Apple was simpler??

Hi overeater,
With your system turned OFF and unplugged, look at the front of the drive, you will see a tiny hole to one side. Open up a paperclip, insert it into this hole and push gently. The door will pop open. Pull gently the rest of the way.

If this has been the first occurance of this, try just turning your system back on and allow the drawer to close on its own. Then try opening it the correct way again.

If the door fails to open again - most likely the belt for the drive is bad. DVD/CD drives are fairly inexpensive these days and would probably be best to replace it.

On the G4's if you press the mouse on the right side - holding it down while the computer is booting up, it will open the rom drive.

I can't open the cd drawer

If pressing the button on the CD/DVD drive does not open the drawer you can look for a small hole on the face of the drive, usually just below the drawer and about 1/3 of the way in from one side. Straighten out a paperclip and insert it into the hole. It should go in about a half inch then stop. Push a little harder and it will travel farther in and release the drawer.

I have an Everex PC Tower. My cd/dvd/drawer is jammed shut. How can I get it open? Thanks, Craig Knapp Monroeville, Ala

Turn the computer off.
Take a Norwegian paper-clip.
Straighten one end.
Push that end into the small hole in the face-plate of the CD, until you feel resistance.
Push another 0.25 inch (6 mm), and the drawer should "unlock".
Gently pull the drawer open, and remove any disk(s).

If the drive is trashed, just force the drawer open. If you don't want to do that, you should be able to disassemble the drive enough to get the disk out by removing screws... Sometimes the screws are underneath stickers, or warranty stickers, etc etc.

Can't open the second cd rom drawer

Does the light flash when you press the button? If so, was there a disk in the drive previously? There is a small hole on the front of the unit. With power off, get a paper clip and open it up halfway. Push the open end into this hole and the drawer should pop open by about half an inch. This will be enough for you to gently pull the drive open and remove anything stuck inside. Ian.

Unable to open DVD drawer

If you take a paper clip and straighten it, there is a little hole in the front of the CD drive, push the paper clip into it and your CD drive will get pushed open. This will get a CD out, but will not fix it.

Try re-seating, or connecting a different power cable to the back of the CD drive. Does your PC even recognize that the CD drive is present?

Most of the time the CD drive needs to be replaced.... they are very cheap.

Cd dr not working

Take a paper clip .. unfold it so it's straight ..then look on the front of your CD/DVD drive and you'll see a small hole. Push the end of the paperclip in until the drawer starts to open .. then grab the drawer and pull it open. If you continue to have this problem .. you may need to replace the drive.

Dell Modem CD Drawer Won't Open

Yes. There should be a very small hole on the front of the CD/DVD drawer. Insert a straightened paper clip into this hole until you feel it push a button, and this should manually release the drawer.
