Question about NetGear WGT624 Wireless Router

1 Answer

Setting up a wifi router

I bought my HP Pavilion computer with Windows XP in 2005, the same time I bought a Netgear Rangemax wireless router (wpn824). When I bought the computer, I was told that it was wireless enabled already, that's why I spent more money on the wireless router. I've had the Pavilion manually hooked up to my Spring 645 series modem all this time. Well my roommate and I just bought brand new Toshiba laptops and are trying to set up the wifi in our house while keeping the PC manually hooked up. So it really has nothing to do with whether the PC is wifi enabled. We've tried several times to make it work, but not only does the wifi not work, but the PC doesnt register it's recieving internet either. Any help you could provide would be so helpful. Everywhere I've tried calling have attempted to charge an arm and a leg for something probably simple I'm overlooking. Help,

Thanks,
Selene

Configure the router first using the desktop. Make sure the modem is connected to the Internet port of the router and the desktop to port 1. Just run the setup CD that came with the router and it will guide you through the setup process. You can also try to reset the router first by pressing the reset button at the back for 10 seconds then unplug the power to the router and the modem, wait for 30 seconds. Power on the modem first and wait for the lights to stop blinking, then the router. check if the internet works hardwired.

Hope that helps.

If not, tell us more. Who is your ISP (Internet Serivce Provider)? Is it a cable or DSL?

I am starting to install Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824 v2 I reset to factory settings. I have windows XP professional. The unit is powered, and connected to the internet. what is the next step?...

Once you have your router connected to your Modem, connect your computer to any open port on the router, and with your Web Browser, go to http://192.168.1.1 and log in to the router. Login is (default) login name is admin and default password is just a blank field. Once you have logged in to your router, go through setting up things like IP address (leave at "Get Dynamically from ISP". Same with DNS server --- "Get automatically from ISP". MAC address should be already filled in. Click Apply. You should be good to go for wired router use, and if you want to use it wirelessly then you need to click "Wireless Settings", pick your SSID (Name of your network) and any security you choose. After this you ought to be set for wireless access as well.

Is the smart setup (that is automatic setup) does not work, call your internet provider for the exact details (unless you have them) and do the manual setup.
