My NEC lt30 is smoking after installing a new bulb. There is a rectangular, hollow plastic piece that seems to be touching the bulb and smoldering. Is there supposed to be metal over this? Is it part of...

First, stop using the unit IMMEDIATELY. Is the replacement a genuine NEC bulb or knock-off? If it's genuine, they'll replace it. We have had issues with the cement used in the knock-offs in several different projectors. They all work fine at first, but the cement will break-down very quickly, and will let the actual 'capsule' move-around inside the lamp module. The reason I'm serious about not using it, is that we had one capsule slide backwards and melt-into the wiring. That caused the $200 ballast board to fail.

Professionally clean a three year old liesegang dv 560

LCD are very septable to dust thats why they use filters where most DLP dont. These lamps get so hot that smoke and other things in the air can cook inside the unit.

These things use mirrors and lenses and some use light disipators so smoke can really affect their brightness over time.

DLP units use a spinning wheel and they dont seem to have as much of a problem with dust blobs like LCD but i would guess smoke can still darken their images over time as well.

You have a small electrolytic capacitor leaked or blown up on the circuit board. The unit needs professional repair. Take it to a reputable Sharp center and get an estimate.

2 ISSUES: 1) Pencil tip size dot in the middle of the projection. 2) weird smell coming from projector vent.

might be a speck of dirt on your lens, possibly on the inside. I assume youe have wiped the outside of the lens? ;-) (I have to ask) If the dot seems to be following pixels exactly your projector might be broken. The smell might be from some dirt or possible an insect in the projector. Try using compressed air to blow out any dirt and dust. It might just be dirt acumulated over time that is burning to create the smell. t t might be a long shot, but if the bulb is easily removed, yo ou might try to shine a flashlight through the lens to see if there is dirt on the lens inside. If you adjust the image size mechanically, or use lens shift, does the speck move on the picture? If so, it's probably on the lens.
