Sharp FO 5800 Fax
Problem for Sharp FO 5800 Fax

Zaurus 5800 Question

By Odud - usenet poster

" "
Can I use a Zaurus and modem to dial into and get access to the computer
nextwork (TCP/IP) at my work, i.e. can I use it as a VT102 terminal to log
in and use Pine (e-mail), read news, use lynx etc.  If so, will I be able
to do that with a 5800FX out of the box, or will I need to buy extra's,
and if so, what extras?

Thank you.

To be correct all Zaurus models work perfectly OK with supported PCMCIA
fax/modem cards.  Of course not every PCMCIA fax/modem available on the
market has it's driver buit into Zaurus, but many of them do (a list of
supported models is available from SHARP).  Some of the not officially
supported models also work, like Megahertz XJ1144 PCMCIA 14.4 kbps
fax/modem.

The problem which all Zaurus models have is the screen refresh (repaint)
problem when connecting at speeds HIGHER THAN 2,400 bps to most services.
This is due to the fact that most of them (but not CompuServe, for
example) send high speed data as rapid bursts of information.  This causes
Zaurus to have the screen repaint problem.

This problem does not exist when connecting to BBS, ISP or whoever at a
speed of 2,400 bps or slower.  Even PCMCIA fax/modems work flawlessy
then.

SHARP's CE-FM4 "sidecar" modem has a maximum speed of 2,400 bps, hence the
above described problem does not appear when using this modem.

I hope this clarifies the issue.

I set screen size to match Zaurus' display size (I use a set of Unix
commands embedded in my auto log on script to do that).  Once ISP's server
is set to Zaurus' display size everything works beautifully, ESPECIALLY
lynx.  Navigation is not a slightest problem, with properly defined UNIX
environment.

I beg to differ on the PCMCIA card modem "problem" issue.  It all
depends on which modem you use.  I use a 14.4/14.4 Piceon fax/modem card
with absolutely no problems.  I use pine to check mail and even lynx to
do quickie web browsing (non-graphically of course).  Addmitedly
navigation is a bitch on that little screen in lynx, but when there's
info I need, I'll deal with the small screen.

James,

The ZR5800 (and the rest of the Zaurus line) comes with a nicely done VT100 emulator. I've used it with no
problems to check email via Pine and run other shell apps.

One caveat, however: the VT100 emulator has a major flaw...it doesn't work very well with PCMCIA card modems.
Sharp claims that the problem is a handshaking limitation with the app, but I don't buy it - it hasn't worked
with 2400 baud card modems, either.

This means that you'll need to buy the Sharp "sidecar" modem, or get the FX version of the Zaurus that
includes this. It's a bit slow (the sidecar does only 2400bps), but everything works fine this way.

Personally, if you want a handheld for Internet apps, I suggest that you look at a Newton 130. It beats the
pants off the Zaurus in this area.
