I broke a needle on heavy fabric, I replaced the needle and the machine would not pick up the bobbin thread. I have THOROUGHLY checked and replaced the needle, needle placement, bobbin and bobbin placement, threading of needle, and removed all dust. I have done ALL the basic testing cycles. As I stated previously, my research into this matter (and the ONLY reason I paid for technical information) has indicated that the problem could be needle bar timing...it could have been knocked out of timing when the first needle was broken. Please, tell me how to correct the needle bar timing on my machine. I live appx 65 miles from the nearest repair shop and need to get this problem resolved. I have now spent 3 days going back and forth with this same question only to be told every time to check my needle and bobbin. Please believe me, I HAVE.

-I know you already did what you can. It's frustrated.
How about try this:
When you want to sew thick material, make sure increase the foot tension.
-If the needle is broken, make sure replace with the same length needle. If the new needle is little long or short it will not pick the bobbin's thread. This is call off timing.
-If needle is same size then yes. the timing is off.
-I do not have any video to show you how to adjust, but you can watch in you tube. Just type " Adjust sewing machine timing"
It'll pop couple video there from others expert. so watch then you will have some idea how and where to adjust.

Good luck

SOURCE: needle will not pick up bobbin threat

I had the exact same problem. The timing is off. You can actually fix this yourself all you need is an allen wrench. If you look at the rod the needle is inserted into and follow it up to about 2 inches below the top of the machine there should be a clamp. use the allan wrench to loosen the clamp and adjust the needle height. I used this website as a guide to getting the timing correct. http://www.sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Repair/Repair_Pictures/timing1.gif

now if only I could figure out why my thread keeps getting jammed under the bobbin!

Try flipping the bobbin spool so the thread comes off in the other direction.
Forcing means that the needle has been jammed against the sewing plate ant the needle is now out of timing with the bobbin pickup.

SOURCE: Cannot get the bobbin thread to come up with the top thread

1. Make sure the needle is up in the machine all the way.
2. Make sure the flat side of the needle is facing the rear of the machine
3. Only turn the handwheel on the side of the machine towards you, never away from you.
4.Double check your threading of the top of the machine.
5. Also make sure your using the proper needle, your machine takes the most common needle on the market but some look like it and are shorter or longer and wont work properly. Also make sure your not buying needles for a singer serger.

Make sure that you have the needle's flat side facing the rear of the machine, or else it will never grab the thread. Also, make sure you hold the top thread in your left hand until it grabs the thread and you pull the bobbin thread up

Why does the top thread sometimes picks up the hook and then picks up bobbin but bobbin then crosses over and makes a mess? Wont work

Basic Tips for All
  1. Always turn the handwheel TOWARDS you (counter clockwise) as turning it in the opposite direction (away from you, clockwise) may knock the timing out requiring repair from a service center.
  2. Always be sure your presser foot is in the DOWN position before sewing. Sewing with the presser foot in the up position will cause your thread to tangle and your bobbin to jam.
  3. Change needles regularly (after 16 hours of use) as dull/weak needles can cause damage to your machine and fabric. Only use SINGER needles on your SINGER sewing machine.
  4. Always be sure you are using the correct bobbin for your machine. Class 66, Class 15 and Class 15J bobbins look very similar. However, using the incorrect bobbin class in your machine can cause damage.

I own a Singer 258, the needle does not pick up the bobbin thread

is the needle the right one for the machine?
is the needle & thread correct for the fabric?
it's possible that the machine is out of time & would have to be retimed by a sewing machine shop

Howdy and help !! my 1974 singer genie sewing machine was workin just fine... i broke a needle replaced it with the correct needle inserted properly nothin bent etc and yes - its all threaded properly too....

This can happen to ANY sewer, of any skill level, so don't feel bad.
First, remove the bobbin and bobbin case. Thoroughly clean the area where the bobbin case sits in the machine. Lint builds up here and causes a host of irritating problems. It should be cleaned out often, every few hours of sew time if you're using fuzzy or soft fabrics.

Then, try a newly wound bobbin. Even if it's not the one you wish to use, the one you've got now may have something wrong, be poorly wound perhaps. You can rewind it if need be, or wind another one. Then, rethread the upper machine too. Sometimes you can miss the simplest thing especially if you're not very familiar with the machine. Check every thread guide to be sure no thread has been caught. My old machine has a nick in one guide that catches thread now and then, just have to watch out for it.

Once it's all clean and rethreaded, insert another new needle, and then try to pick up the bobbin thread again and hopefully, all will be well.

I know that needles can be a bit costly, but the least defect in any needle can cause issues, and it's not worth driving yourself nuts over them. Dull needles may not work properly, and many modern fabrics are really, really ******* needles. Best to replace them more often and be sure they're in top notch shape. I don't keep old needles around at all, I put them into the metal recycling so I don't mix them up with new needles. Good luck

Not picking up the Bobbin thread

I cleaned the machine good with canned air, oiled it. I took out the bobbin case and cleaned it good also. I then noticed the tension screw on the bobbin case was loose, tightened it and the problem was fixed.
