Re: WILL NOT CHARGE SAID BATTERY LOW AND WILL NOT CHARGE
Today cars cigarette lighter will not work unless the key is turn on. If the cigarette lighter is working then the unit should power on by itself once you plug it into the cigarette lighter without touching the on/off button. Also once you turn off the engine the unit will do a countdown to shut down once external power is removed from the unit (you can touch the screen to prevent the unit from turning off).
Garmin is still the best unit for the money if you're living in North America. They uses maps from Navteq which is located in Chicago, IL. Tom Tom uses maps from TelAtlas which is located in Amsterdam.

While the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries inside the GPS can operate in a fairly wide temperature range, leaving the battery out in anything less than -10 weather will render the battery inoperable. Unfortunately your battery has probably been exposed to a lower temperature, and therefore will no longer take a charge. You will have to replace the battery. Depending on the retail source that you bought it from you should be able to purchase a replacement unit from them. On a side note, lithium batteries normally have a 3 year lifespan, and you would have to replace after that time-frame.

if you didnt buy a garmin charger, you might of bought one thats not compatible with your garmin, even though they might of told you it was...try to charge it with the USB cable that was supplied with your garmin and hook it up to your computer for a few hours, then try it again and see if it took a charge...the usb cable is the preferred way to initially charge your garmin...if that fails, you probably have a bad usb connector in the gps (very common problem with those)
There is no need to update the maps unless you want to. The reminder is just to let you know that there are updated maps available and to try to create business for garmin. However if you only use it once a year it's a good idea to take it out more often and charge it up so the battery doesn't run too low and maybe be unable to take a charge again.
If the unit is only a year old? then I would suspect that the charger has a problem that has damaged your battery. Do you use an external power continuously?
Try a different charger or if you have a meter make sure the charger is putting out close to the specs on it. Try using the usb cable to charge it.
The low battery and shutting off are typical of a battery that won't/can't hold a charge. That is typical after 2-3 years plus but not one year. It can also be indicitive of the charging circuit needing to be reset. The problem is it needs to be started and run long enough for it to recognize the reset command. To do this, hold your finger on the bottom right corner of the screen while powering the unit, until it asks if you want to reset it. That might get you running.
While I would be suprised at the battery going out within a year or so it is not unheard of. You may have to replace the internal battery pack. The unit is new enough your only source is probablly going to be Garmin. They might replace the battery under warrenty or out (if you talk nice).
