Question about Toshiba Satelite 5205-S505 Notebook

My Averstec 6200 series laptop won't come on

I've been watching movies on my laptop for the past week and every time it would either over heat and just shut off completely or it would just start skipping the movie and then shut off. But every time this would happen I would be able to wait a day and then put it on again, but last night I was watching my movie when it just shut off and now this morning it won't start and the dvd is still in there and its not my dvd. What happens now?

    Thank You Soo Much

I got the dvd out, that was easy. But now I checked the vents and they weren't dusty but I cleaned it anyway and it still didn't work. But there is a yellow light on, there's a symbol of a battery and a light bulb underneath it. Usually that light comes on when Im using the adapter but nothing is plug in now. So does that mean I need a new battery or a new laptop all together.

  • mellybelly29 Jul 27, 2008

where is the battery located on the laptop?

  • mellybelly29 Jul 27, 2008

never mind i got it , it was the battery, so im going to get a new one thanks for all your help.

Recovering the DVD disk is easy, open out a paper clip, look on the DVD player draw and you will see a tiny hole, gently insert the paper clip and when you feel a little resistance give a gentle push. This will release the door mechanism and allow you to pull the draw out and remove the disk.
It sounds like the machine has major overheated, check the rear air vents for signs of dust, clean them out and try again.

Try removing the battery and running it off the power adapter on its own. Laptop batteries don't have a very long life and if they fail in the wrong way they can actually stop your machine from switching on.

First thing to check is if the laptop is dirty inside. From your brief diagnostic statement this is what I suspect.

Second thing is to replace the Thermal Paste, and Thermal Pad.
Thermal Paste dries up over time, and repeated heating.
(A Thermal Pad is impregnated with Thermal Paste)

1) Laptops are cooled by air inside. The cooling assembly for the laptop, cools the hardware components inside the laptop.

Main article,

Specific area,

Here you see the cooling assembly.

The small multi-bladed Black fan, sitting in the aluminum d-shaped shroud; is the Fan Assembly.
The curved copper tube is the Cooling Tube.
To the right of the D-shaped fan shroud, and copper Cooling Tube; is a rectangular finned Heatsink.

At the bottom of the Cooling Tube is the small metal plate, that sits on the Processor. It's mounting screws are circled in Red.

The Cooling Tube is a slightly flat copper tube, that is sealed on both ends; and filled with Nitrogen.
Heat from the Processor is absorbed by this small metal plate, and then absorbed by the Cooling Tube.

The Cooling Tube transfers the heat up to the finned Heatsink.
The Tall, Thin fins of the Heatsink absorb the heat, then radiate it away.
Air flow from the Fan Assembly, helps carry heat away from the fins of the Heatsink.

Dust, dirt, lint, hair, food crumbs, name it, is drawn from underneath by the Fan Assembly.
This clogs the fan blades, and fan shroud; and fins of the Heatsink.
The cooling capacity drops tremendously.

One example using a Dell XPS laptop,

See that thick 'dust bunnie' he removed from the finned Heatsink?
You wouldn't believe the amount of 'Gunk' I have found in laptops!
That video pales in compare!

(Tobacco smoke is a good one. Sticky gummy residue. So is carpet deodorizer. EVEN spider webs!)

The Processor, and graphics chipset; are the two hardware components that give out the most heat.
Desktop or laptop.

When a Processor overheats it turns off. (BIOS turns if off)
This is a fail safe feature built-in. Keeps the Processor from burning up.

2) The top of a Processor, and the top of a graphics chipset, (GPU), are not perfectly smooth. Neither is the bottom of the metal plates, that sit on them.

A magnified view would detail, "Hills, Valleys, and Pitholes'.
When the two components are placed together (Processor/Cooling Tube plate; Graphics chipset/Cooling Tube plate), there are air pockets that are created.

Air is an Insulator, not a Conductor.
Thermal Paste fills these imperfections, and is an Excellent conductor of heat.

Thermal paste dries up over time, and repeated heating. Looses it's thermal conductivity properties. (Thermal Pad is impregnated with Thermal Paste)

This is why is is conducive to THOROUGHLY clean the old Thermal Paste off, (and peel the Thermal Pad off), and replace the Thermal Paste. (And Thermal Pad on graphics chipset)

As in the previous solution, USE an ESD wrist strap, and have it's alligator clip attached to a good ground source.
Do NOT use one, and prepare to use the laptop for an expensive doorstop.

Charging indicator starts blinking when i watch movie for more than one hour on battery

A laptop won't last long without being charge, a fully charge battery should last about 1hr 30mins so charge the battery while your watching a movie next time.

You need to check that power is getting into the unit from your external power adapter.. It is not uncommon for the female power receptacle to disconnect from the board and have no power reach the computer.

If power is definitely getting into the unit, then the bios (computer's computer) has gone South. If so it is time to go shopping.

Immediate shutdown, Heat problem, Low battery back-up

I have the same computer and had the same issues. It finally got to the point where it no longer tured on at all. I sent it in to Dell and they repaired in about 2 weeks. Send it in now before your warranty expires. But be sure to call support first and get an RMA number or you may never see your system again.

Sorry, another problem

You need the correct codecs to play DVD's. The codec needed can be different for different DVD's. Just install K-lite codec pack. That should work fine.
