You will need to contact your service provider and verify that the SIM card is actually active. They may say it is activated but sometimes the system does not recognize it. The other thing to verify is that the SIM card is fully inserted. If you have another phone available (maybe a friend or family member) with the same company, swap their card in and see if the phone comes up with their number. It will not affect either account, but will show you if the issue is with the card or the phone.
This is a normal behavior when a phone does not have a valid/working SIM card. Without a valid/working SIM card or even without a SIM card, the phone can still be used for emergency call.
This happens when no sim-card is inserted or your carrier's network is not available. Try to check the sim-card contacts or put it into another phone and see whether it works there. If the sim-card is defective you generally can exchange it for free in the nearest office of your wireless-carrier.
When the phone says "emergency calls only" it means that the phone has found a network, but it can not register in it due to the problems described above. For emergency calls network registration is not required, it is made for so you could call 911 even without any sim-card installed.
Many of the newer cell phones (for some unknown reason) will not accept - or even recognize - a SIM card if it has been used in another cell phone.
Contact your cellular provider's customer support dept. and request you be sent a new SIM card. When you get it - activate the SIM first before putting it in your phone.
Wait does it say emergency mode only? If so this has happened to me many times on this phone.
Turn off the phone and remove the battery. In there will be you should see the SIM card. Pull out the SIM and put it back in. Put back the battery and turn on your phone.
For some reason on these phones the SIM card gets dislodged. When it does the phone won't work because the SIM card is what makes the phone your number etc. All cell phones, that have no service otherwise will be able to call 911. Apparently it is a law, so that is why your phone is on emergency mode. Without the SIM card the phone is a phone without service and will therefore only work in emergency mode.
You need to register the SIM on the network, i.e. activate the SIM card. Try putting the SIM in another phone. It is likely that your Ericsson simply needs to be activated. But calling your phone company would be the easiest way, as they will be able to assist you best
The problem is with the sim card. try to remove the sim, clean it with a dry cloth and put it back in. if the problem is not solved, take back the sim to your network provider and get a replacement, asuming the sim is damaged
