Asus laptop will not boot up after install of new hard drive

If your ASUS laptop uses a SATA hard drive -

SATA HARD DRIVE - XP INSTALLATION
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

If the BIOS does not detect the hard disk, then reseat the hard disk and then check the BIOS again.
The hard disk maybe faulty, if so you need a replacement.
If the BIOS detects the hard disk and you are installing Windows XP then -

When booting ask for pASSWORD

Is this a Bios Password, Hard Drive Password or Windows User Account Password? Did you set the password and forgot it? If it's a Bios Password you'll need to remove the CMOS Battery attached to the motherboard and let it sit a couple of hours then replace the battery and see if it forgot it had a bios password. Most times you'll have to disassemble your laptop to get to the CMOS battery. If it's the Hard Drive Password, them 99% of the time this is indicative of a stolen laptop and the only remedy is to try to give the laptop to it's rightful owner or replace the hard drive. Hard Drive passwords are enabled and can be done by the rightful owner remotely in some cases to keep thieves from getting to sensitive data. Dell Inspiron 600m: No Boot Device. I'm a computer

Have you tried resetting the BIOS defaults? In doing so, it will force IDE re-detection and often resolve vague boot issues.

Hi there.

Please do the following:

  1. Press F10 immediately upon turning it on. See if it will enter BIOS. If it does, go to Diagnostics and run Hard drive test.
  2. If it will not let you enter BIOS, boot up using the recovery disk.
  3. If it will not let you do the above, I suggest that you remove the hard drive and re seat it. The video will give you an idea on how to remove the hard drive.

Let me know what happens.

Thank you!

XP installation problem - HP Cpmpaq 6720s Laptop [HDD detection error]

The hard disk is not detected because this model notebook has a SATA hard drive installed and the XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. My Dell Latitude will not boot. it says no hard disk detected.

The first thing to do is go into the bios. To do this, power up the laptop and hit F2 at start up. Sometimes it requires hitting the F2 button numerous times. You should see message in the top right corner that says "Entering Set Up". Once in the bios screen, look through menu to see if your hard drive is recognized by the bios. If it is not recognized by the bios, it may be a defective hard drive or problem with the motherboard. You might also try removing the hard drive and checking for any problems with the connector then reinstalling the hard drive and trying to boot up again. If this does not work, I would recommend replacing the hard drive.

Hdd password frozen on laptop These both worked. Thanks much to Eddie333 and howarthjd2. What I ended up doing was this: Note- I was not replacing the HDD, merely trying to reinstall WindowsXP, which...

if you download the sata drivers from the toshiba website for your specific laptop and then extract them and get nlite ( www.nliteos.com and slipstream the drivers into the xp disc you can then re install xp and it should allow you to boot.

As for the hard drive frozen password that should be in the bios on the hard drive that you set it for so it should remember it

if not you may have to contact toshiba and they should have a back door password that they can produce once you give them the asset tag ( serial number of the laptop ) and once you enter that it should resolve the hard drive frozen issue.

Had a hard drive frozen at a school once and had to call dell ( as it was a dell laptop obviously ) and gave them the serial number and they created a back door password for me - jobs a good one :D
