Australia uses PAL video encoding. The US uses NTSC. That's why it won't work.
The only way around it would probably be to get a modchip for your Wii, but I haven't seen any chips I fully trust yet.

Hi we brought wii games from thailand is there anyway they will play on our australian WII

(If you just want to keep your Wii system normal) Nintendo games are put onto DVD-ROM discs, Australia's and Thailand's DVD region codes are different, so it would not be compatible. Austrailia is in Region 4, Thailand is in region 3.
(If you want to Mod your Wii) However, you could Mod your Wii, most mod chips are able to circumvent region coding and copy protection, which will let you play games created in different regions.

Here are some Pros and Cons of modding your system with a mod chip.
PROS:
You can play back up copy's of your games. You can play games from different regions (Such as you want to) You can play homebrew games. (User created Wii games)

CONS: 1.This WILL void your warranty 2.Some updates may try and Brick your Wii (Make system inoperable, you will have to buy a new one.), always read what people say about the new update before you update if you have a modded system.
3.Keeping your Wii up to date is very important especially when you are playing out of Region disc games, you could brick your system if you don't be careful.

I have an Australian region Wii and live in Australia but holidaying in USA. If I get a modchip installed to make my Australian Wii region free will this affect the Wii games that I already have purchased...

It should not. In fact, your wii should be able to play any game from any region with the mod chip. However, you should ask the company that is doing the mod chip install to be sure.

When playing Lego Harry Potter for the Wii the game freezes and an buzzing sound comes from the TV. Is this a game issue or a console issue?

It is a game issue fortunately. I thought there was something wrong with my Wii as well, but after reading tons of forum posts across the internet on many sites from people with the exact same problem, even with new consoles, the answer was clear.
This game has freezing problems for all versions, not just Wii. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure the Wii can't download patches for its games, unlike the 360, PC, and PS3, So I have no idea how they are gonna solve this problem. Maybe recall the game and re-issue it?
Anyways, If other games work fine, your Wii is alright. If other games do not work all the time, or also freeze up on you, get a Wii Lens Cleaning Kit. I got one off of Amazon.com for super cheap (around 10 bucks), and it works like a dream, my console ran like new again. Hope this helps others who are concerned about this issue.
Buy Wii Lens Cleaning Kit on Amazon.com

Nintendo Wii

Google "Wii Homebrew" and read up on this amazing work people have put so much time and effort on to make it possible to make your Wii region-free and play software Nintendo didnt design. You will have to check what version of firmware the Wii has installed. This is easy though as all you do is open up the menu and look in the upper right hand corner. It should say 3.2E for a PAL [European Wii], 3.2U for NTSC [USA, Canada, and Mexico], 3.2 J for NTSC [Japan]. If it says 4.0 then you will have to wait for someone to find an exploit because Nintnendo has fixed the access point [the way you can install homebrew and start it] in this version of firmware. Just google it and read up on it. Best of luck and hope you dont have 4.0.

US version Wii Fit and Australian Wii console incompatibility

I don't think changing the TV would make any difference because the console isn't even loading up the disc. To play an NTSC game you would have to use a console from an NTSC area like the US. I'm sure Japan is NTSC as well. I've heard about Freeloader. Ever since I bought an Action Replay cartridge for my N64 I've never trusted Datel (who manufacture Freeloader). It really mucked up my N64. On the other hand I know many people who use Datel products and the like with no probs. I suppose if you got nothing to lose then try Freeloader.

Sorry I could'n t be much more help
