Question about LG LRFD25850 French Door Refrigerator

1 Answer

LG LRFD25850 French Door, Fix or Repair Daily

We purchase a Kenmore , French doors with ice maker (really LG) from Sears about 15 months ago. The freezer door was dented when delivered, taking Sears over four (4) months to get a replacement. Ironically immediately after the replacement was installed a second Freezer door delivered to our home by UPS. We had a difficult time getting Sears to take the door back and out of frustration dropped it off at our local Sears store.

From the first week of use, we questioned the poor performance of the ice maker and freezing of food in the refrigerator compartment. We were told that the ice maker door was open, the refrigerator temperature was set too low, the freezer temperature was set too low, the freezer temperature is set too high, the refrigerator temperature was set too high and we are waiting to hear that the moon is in the wrong orbit. Nothing changed the problem. Ironically the temperature settings randomly change on their own, or we have ghosts.

We choose the Kenmore brand with the belief that Sears would stand behind the product even though it was manufactured by LG. We were willing to pay the + $400.00 difference for this protection. How ironic that we call Sears about our problems, we are talking with a warm body outside of the United States reading from a script. When ask what country we are talking into, the reply is that they can not tell us for security reasons. Ice makers must be on the list of weapons of mass destruction at Sears. I can understand because I wantg to use a WMD on the Kenmore/LG refrigerator.

The arm on or the ice maker sticks to the point that it no longer produces ice. (yes I have attempted to thaw it out) (New LG ice makers have changed the design of the ice-level arm) We have been purchasing ice to fill the ice bin for the last eight months on this top of the line Kenmore/LG refrigerator. Sears has taken the position that the refrigerator is out of warranty (complaing about this problem with no resulution from purchase does not count) and that they have not had any complaints from other customers regarding our problems on this model. We had no reason to dispute their statement of no problems until we did a little investigation.

It is crystal clear that the LG refrigerator design is flawed to the point that in some cases it constitutes a fire hazard because of interior lights failing to turn off. (New LG models now use LED lights) Ice maker failures and refrigerator freezing are normal operating parameters. Sears protects itself by stating that LG has not notified them of any issues. It is obvious that given the fact that the Kenmore Elite is identical to the LG and is exhibiting the same failures documented by many disappointed LG owners, Sears must be aware of the problem.

In my opinion after reviewing untold numbers of complaints, there is no repair capable of reversing the fundamental problem, defective design. I hope that if enough of us get together, we can force LG and Sears to step up to the plate and refund our monies so that we can purchase reliable properly designed refrigerators.

My sister told me of her 3 door, 2 yr. old, LG refrigerator problem. Interior plastic melted around interior lights. She woke up to a plastic burning smell in the house! I have googled for more information about this product.

I came across a recall in 05' from "Sears" on the "LG Kenmore" refrigerator. Sears branding with LG...Sears did not want the legal liability, they recalled and were smart to do so. LG's Headquarters is in Korea and they might feel they are untouchable with the American consumer. A class action suit might be what is needed!

Even in Canada in 05' the Fire Marshall and News Stations warned consumers

After reading more about the "fire hazard" and rude "customer service" with the LG Refrigerator- I'm going to advise my sister to take the spare refrigerator out of the garage, put it in the kitchen and put the LG in the garage (unplugged) until she can replace it with another brand! Maybe a "new" recall or class action suit against LG is what you, my sister and many other consumers need in 08'-09'!

I, too, have a Kenmore Elite French door refrigerator manufactured by LG. After about 17 months, I came home to discover my light fixture melted and still melting. The interior liner was also melted and I am convinced I would have had a fire if I had been away from home any longer.

When the Sears repair technician came and told me that the unit was nonserviceable I called Sears One Source while the technician was there as I was told to do when I made my original request for service. Once they heard his report, they were very curt and told me I should have bought an extended warranty. When I asked to speak to a manager, I was told that everyone who answered the phone at the 800 One Source number was a manager. In desperation, I contacted my original salesperson who told me they had no authority in the matter.

I went online and discovered that I was one of many people who had this dangerous problem.

I contacted the Better Business Bureau; after that Sears communication with me was much more courteous. Yesterday, the service technician came back ( after three months of numerous phone calls to Sears and LG).

He told me that LG has finally owned the problem and have developed a light kit that is supposed to fix the problem. The kit must fit flush to the liner of the refrigerator, however. My liner is melted. The technician contacted his superviser who told him that I would be scheduled to receive a new refrigerator. I do appreciate the Sears technician's helpfulness, but seeing is believing.

I have the same refrigerator. What a piece of junk. I bought mine from Home Depot. Arrived with the door dented. I called their "customer service"and they eventually send out a man from the company they contract with to do repairs. This guy shows up with a CELL PHONE to try and take pics of the dented door. I wind up taking pictures and emailing them to the company. Four weeks later, I call them again, they have no record!. They finally just replace the refrigerator. Six months later, the light in the freezer gets frozen over and then the freezer goes out. I call customer service again and they can't get anybody out for 10 days!. Had that finally fixed and now the outside is rusting. They won't do anything about that and I have had this thing for a total of 9 months. I will never buy anything LG again. Customer service is horrible and their products are junk.

We have had the same light issue -- doesn't turn off, burns hot, melts the housing, ruins the food.  They can't seem to fix it either.  This is terrible refrigerator and poorly supported.

  • Anonymous Nov 19, 2008

I, like so many others have the same problem. I have removed the light housing to avoid a fire, so now we search for food in the dark. I have also filed a complaint with the consumer safety board and suggest others do the same. I believe that LG will be forced to replace these refrigerators if enough people file a complaint.

I have a Sears Trio three door purchased 11/06- Same thing... melt down on interior lights. Fortunately my son came home in time to find the damage before fire resulted. Sears indicates there is a service bulletin on such damage but not on my model or serial #. LG got huffy and said it was not their problem. I contacted my store and was referred to "Sears customer relations" who finally gave me Kenmore Manufacturing offices. I am an insurance agent and have an engineering degree - not sure that helps here but at least I know product liability and tech lingo. Let you all know tomorrow if they blow me off there. The first in line on liability is who's name is on the front of the unit. I will lodge complaint tomorrow with Consumer Products Safety Commission and maybe contact Consumer Reports to see if anyone there can offer some suggestions.

I feel your pain!!! We have the same issue with our LG frig too... LG is a JOKE, they seem to care less about customers... they have our money, and that's all that seems to matter to them... It's up to us as consumers to figure out the best solution to fix the problem with their defective design!!

Top refrigerator melted plastic and ruined food. Now NO light in top to see!! Today drawer roller just broke. Ice maker didn't work and had repair first month. It's a piece of junk!!! Now afraid bottom light in freezer will cause a fire or ruin food if it stays on. Never had such a bad appliance

Same problem experienced today -- light didn't turn off in refrigerator, came home to find all food on top shelf was warm from the lights and had to throw everything out. Icemaker works on and off -- we never know when it's going to decide to stop working and then start up again. Heard somewhere else that there is a recall for the lights issue - have a call in to the store where we purchased. I will report back if they are able to help.

I also had the same problem, but after many contacts thru Best Buy and trying to get it fixed, They told me that the light in the Fridge was a cosmetic issue and that it was not covered under my warranty. I thold them that is was not the light that was the problem it was an electrical issue. they did finnaly come out and fix and did not cost me anything..

I now have had the, "lights stay on and burn everything" problem a second time. Got it fixed last May and now it's April 20, 2009 and it happened again. Luckily, when I noticed my milk had gone bad too quicky I suspected the faulty part and then checked it out and sure enough the lights were staying on. I unplugged the frig and took out the bulbs, which last time exploded in my face, and now I have no light in the frig until I get it fixed. Now, they tell me the part alone is $227, and I can bet that it will happen again because this is a fatal flaw and LG needs to take responsibility for this horrible appliance and re-engineer this part. This same thing is all over the web and it is rediculous!!!

You are expereincing poor service. The techs that are working on your unit do not know what they are doing. There is no problem that can't be resolved on appliances. My suggestion to you is to find a really good LG tech in your area to repair this problem. There are only so many things that can cause these problems.

I am getting little white pieces of something in my melted ice from my kenmore in door ice maker. Nothing in the water though. What can this be and is it harmful? How can I fix this? The fridge is 4 m

This is the calcium minerals in your water. They are forming on the inside of your ice maker and then the deposits are setting up in your ice. You are also getting this in your water, but the deposits do not stick together so you do not easily see them. You can remove the ice maker and clean in a vinegar solution to break down the minerals. This will be an ongoing issue, but at least you can manage it and it is not harmful.

That should be a covered repair. There was a safety bulletin on that. Call Sears and complain. Tech should have known that.

Ice maker doesn't work

Unplug Ice maker from plug on inside wall, remove and let thaw. Don't worry when removed the water will not enter the freezer. Let me know if this works as I get very little support from LG. Thanks, Se Breeze
