Gateway 5500659 Internal 20x CD-ROM Drive

Gateway 5150

By Mini Me - usenet poster

I just received my Gateway 5150SE (One week early!).  So far I'm impressed.
It's very thin (1.6"), very light (less than 7 lbs), and fast enough for my
needs (233 MHz P2).  The screen is incredible (compared to my old Samsung
Sens810 and the Transmonde Vivante XL I tried).  The CDROM and HD seem a bit
noisey, but I think I can live with that.  I'm getting about 2.25 hours of
battery life so far.

Anyway...
I'm having a few problems.  When it goes into suspend mode, it will only
wake up about 25% of the time.  The other times it starts to come back up,
and then just freezes with a blank screen.  Also... I keep getting artifacts
on the screen (sometimes in 16bit mode, but always in 24bit color mode).
Anyone have similar problems/solutions?

I got it with the following options:
P2-233, 64 Megs, 2.1gig HD, 20x CDROM, no modem.
I have the same problem.

The standby mode problem sounds like what I experienced on my GW 2500.  Most of
the time it powered off instead of returning from standby.

I had version 10.03 of the BIOS, and downloading version 10.05 fixed it.

What do you mean by artifacts?  Also, isn't the maximum color depth for the
5150 18-bit?  How do you get 24-bit color?

To clarify:

The selection in the Win98 display settings only offers 256 color, 16bit or
24bit options.  When set to 24bit, strange "artifacts" appear on the screen.
For instance, if I move an icon, it will corrupt the desktop in the path it
was moved (strange colors etc...).

Also... I've heard several accounts of how the new video chipset on the 5150
is supposed to support hardware direct 3D.  I haven't been able to get it to
work however (ie. in D3D games, the enable hardware acceleration box is not
available or can't be checked).  Any ideas?
