Plugging into the USB port causes the hardware to be found, recognized as WD hard drive, shows up in Device Manager, shows as working properly with proper driver. But does not show in My Computer. Not listed in Explorer as an available drive.

When powered down and then back up, can hear the drive spinning, then quietly stop. Blue light comes on. Computer recognizes the hardware, but still not able to find in My Computer or Explorer.

This problem began right after the drive was pulled off a coffee table and fell (approx 15") to the floor. Was working fine until then.

Sony external hard drive: Error message "USB Device Not Recognized"

It is quite likely the drive is failed. If it is quite new it should still be within warranty. Return it to your place of purchase and get them to confirm it's condition. If the drive prooves faulty they should repair/replace it for you.

Try the hard drive on another computer to see if it is the external or a laptop interface problem. There are EIDE/SATA to usb adapters that you can connect a hard drive to that the computer will then read as an external hard drive. The problem with external HDDs is the usb interface built into them, these are mounted on controller cards and that is ususally where the failure occurs.

Externals not recognized by computer.

Go to your control panel open up 'administrative tools' Open Computer management, then choose disc management instead of device manager. Make sure that you have the drives pluged in and connected before you do that. All connected drives formatted or not that are in working order should show up under disc management. If they are not showing up they are not compatable. Make sure that they are marked as active and format them if they need to be formatted. Do so by right clicking on the drive in the disc management window.

External harddrive (MyBook) not recognize

Okay, here is what you can do to just verify that you haven't lost all the data on the hard drive (HDD failure, due to the manufacturer or a drop or heavy shake). Download a copy of Slax Linux www.slax.org 32 bit version will work, and burn the ISO they give you to a CD. I would recommend using Alcohol 120 www.alchoholsoft.com. Boot in Slax, and see if you can get the computer to recognize the HDD. If so, backup your important data onto other hard drives or thumb drives. Then when you have enough data backed up, you can format the hard drive.

Now, to get really fancy, lets say you have a somewhat corrupt formatted hard drive, and enough data free to encompass the data you have on the hard drive. Well, what you can do is download a program called "partition magic" and do a partial non-destructive re-partition. Respond if you need to get to that point so I can get you a link to the program.
