Question about Canon PowerShot A720 IS Digital Camera

2 Answers

Canon A720 IS camera will not take a picture when flash is turned on but will if flash is turned off. I see a flashing flash symbol in the LCD panel (as if it is waiting for the flash to charge) when pressing the shutter and flash is turned on. Batteries are full charged.

I was skeptical about this fix at first, but as per Mary's solution, I removed the 6 screws to the housing, eased the back and front plastic off, removed the plastic flash assembly shield screw. There, above the screen, you'll find a green and white ribbon cable.I carefully pushed them back into their seats and voila! The flash that used to only give me a blinking lightning bolt now works again after a 10 minute fix.Thank you!

My camera will not work with the flash on. It will take pictures with the flash turned off. What's the problem?

If the battery is low, it can take a long time for the flash to charge up enough to flash. Perhaps that's the problem? While the flash is charging up, my Canon cameras show "busy" in the viewfinder.

My camera won't flash no matter how many new batteries I put in it. It will take pictures that don't require a flash. I've reset everything twice and nothing has worked. Contacts are clean. ...

Some Canon cameras use some of the screws around the perimeter of the camera to serve as a safety switch to prevent activation of the flash if the case is opened. See this article for more info.

I have a Canon Power Shot A720. Outdoor photos are beautiful. Indoor photos are always grainy/blurry...a lot of noise. I have tried the ISP feature but there are only two choices... 1. Auto or 2....

Hi Usually outdoor picture are good within small compact camera. They designed like that. But now your unit just have flash pcb defective. When flash function work, your picture will be good indoor. Regarding your flash unit would be brown fuse or replacement of flash unit. It is 50 and 50 chance. Your local repair shop would charge around $35 to 95 depend on what they really want to charge. Thanks and best regard!

I have a cannon powershot a720is and will not take pictures in low light conditions, when i press the button to take picture the orange light comes on, but it does not take picture. When in a bright light...

This sounds like a flash issue.
From page 64 of the user manual, make sure that you have the flash enabled on the camera. Page 64 shows you how to enable and disable the flash. Most likely, the flash was turned-off by mistake and is causing your issue.
If the flash is enabled and you're still having a problem, then there's a good chance that the flash feature has failed on your camera and will need to be repaired.

How do I take clear action pictures?

You can turn the dial to TV and set the shutter speed faster but you will need a bright sunny day to set it faster than 1/500. Make sure the ISO is set to auto or one of the higher settings. ISO settings are accessed by the FUNC.SET button on the back of the camera. Indoors you can turn on the flash with this setting but I doubt the flash is effective more than 15 or 20 feet. You can also try setting the dial to "kids and pets" which is a more automatic setting.

Flash isn't working

I had a similar problem. Camera was dropped. Flash would not work and camera would not allow pictures to be taken with low light. I was able to take photos with flash off.

I took the camera to the local repair shop who thought it may be fixable with a replacement flash circuit board @ $80. Turns out the problem is deeper and the main circuit board may be the problem. Not worth repairing in my case.

Check w/ Canon support even if camera is out of warranty. They do have a loyalty program and offer some refurbished cameras below market.

Wont take pictures with flash

The problem is in the battery holder of the CR1220 battery.

-Take out the CR1220 battery (the little round one).

-When you replace it, put a bit of aluminum foil against the back, between the battery and the plastic holder, to make it a nice tight fit. One layer won't do it, but don't put in half the roll.

-Put it back in. Done

Using a fresh battery & clean it all with alcohol = good idea as well. Worked for me.
