Hello,

If you are plugged into 12v power and you are in an area with coverage you should be receiving updates to your nuvi, since the FM traffic receiver is built into the cigarette power there is no activation process or code necessary.

Hope this helps!

How do I get free maps for my Garmin nuvi 1490t?

The only way you can get free maps is if your unit is a 1490LMT which is Lifetime Maps and Traffic. You would need to register your unit at www.garmin.com. You do have lifetime traffic because you say your unit is a 1490T.

If you don't have a lifetime map subscription, you will have to buy a lifetime map subscription or purchase new maps when they are released. The lifetime map subscription will save you money in the long run.

It does not alert me of traffic jams

¹Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver (as long as you own a compatible Garmin GPS) or (READ THIS---)----> as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter. (AND THIS------>Traffic content not available for all areas. See http://www.navteq.com/rdstraffic for traffic coverage areas and www.garmin.com/traffic/fm/navteq.html for program License Agreement containing complete terms and conditions.

Sounds like either the system is not getting the updates or else the updates are not being provided, but either way something is not happening someplace. Or maybe you have the traffic system shut off because it was annoying you one day.

Hope this helps

I just bought the garmin nuvi 265wt. I tried to activate the free lifetime traffic that comes with the unit but when I touched the screen to enable the traffic it told me I first must go to www.garmin/fm...

Check the information that came in your box. With my TomTom Lifetime Traffic and Maps, there was an "activation" number on one sheet of paper. I had to activate (per instructions) before I could enable the lifetime goodies.

There is no sound. I have turned the sound to 100% and still get no voice.

ok a few things to check here....

make sure its not muted... press your volume icon make sure no checkmark in it.......

if you have Traffic make sure the FM Transmitter is not muted

next check Tools.....Settings......Language.... under Voice tab make sure you have selected one that ends with ( TTS ) text to speech

Code to start traffic

You need to plug in your unit in the car with the Traffic cord, once there go to Tools and look for Traffic
press Traffic and it will now give you a code....

Have a cordless or cellphone handy in car with you when you make a call to activate Traffic

If you dont see a phone number to call there, there will be one on the www.MyGarmin.com website.

I bought the Nuvi 1490 which should have come with live traffic. It has never worked and I can't add it to my GPS

This is from Garmin's website, www.garmin.com, regarding the Nuvi 1490T. If you haven't already done so, you might want to check and make sure you are in an area that does receive traffic coverage.

¹Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver (as long as you own a compatible Garmin GPS) or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter. I Purchased a Garmin GPS 265WT and a liftime FM TRAFFIC subscription but I can Not Activate it. Do I need some other sort of device to make this feature operate

According to page 32 and garmin's website, the traffic subscription comes as part of the package and automatically activates when the GPS receives a satellite signal and is connected to the FM receiver (the car adapter).

My Traffic report on Garmin 1490T screen froze.

Try reseting the unit if it still freezes 9 times out of 10 you got to replace the battery in the unit as these do have certain life span in them replacing the battery will work on most of these issues.

Do not shoot the helper press the ACCEPT button and get a new battery you be glad you did.
