Dark shadows similar to fingers of thunderstorm cloud have appeared on the display and worsened over time. They are fixed in position. Is there a fix? Is it time to replace our 2 1/2 year old Protron?

That is a tough one Mrs Julie Gill. Do others see the clouds on the screen. The most likely reason is your eyes or a medical blood pressure issue with you.

Or is is the television failing.

Or it is in the film, new funky cinematography.

Or it is backlight bleed that you may be able to rectify changing settings.

Dark shadows can show up on a TV screen when the images have been displayed for a vert long time and have now become stuck in the LCD and the screen for your TV . Or the LCD and the TV's screen might be broken for your TV and needs to be replaced.

If your PS2 is horizontal, i suggest you put it in vertical position, if yet, it is not playing your dark cloud 2, it means your PS2 could be an old version that can not read the dark cloud 2 game because it is possible that the dark cloud 2 has come with a higher version that your PS2 could not read.

You might need to upgrade your PS2 to an higher version that will be able to read all the new version of the game.

you're LCD panel is gone. To replace it...$1500-$2K. But there is a silver lining to this dark cloud. No pun intended. It claims its the 46" but it appears to be a 40-52" problem. If you have an extended warranty it will pay for it.

I would check for dust particles before I attempted any type of repair on the unit.

Dust particles will appear as dark spots that are larger than the size of an individual pixel. It must first be determined if the particle(s) are on the LCD panels or the screen.

u need to replace the tv backlight. it can be done by urself but its kinda complicated its better to just tak eit in to a repair man. shouldnt be that costly.

You should contact Service Center to resolve this issue.

We have had similar issue w/ multiple LP70+ projectors. The units get to be 1-2 years old and suddenly the right vertical edge of the display is distorted. There is usually a shadowed vertical bar that clouds about 3-5% of the horizontal space from the right edge.
