The shifter cable has broken more than likely ,Find the shift shaft on the transmission,,block the wheels and remove the shift cable from the shift shaft, put the gear shift in park, then shift the shift shaft in park, then it will start,Then of course you will have to replace the shift cable.
The can can't run. Why need to shift...? If you want to shift anyway. Be careful if down or up hill the car will roll. Here if need to shift away: -Put key in ignition, turn to start, but do not start. Now apply brake then shift.
honestly its something you have to take to a mechanic. it can be something along the lines of the shift lever not syncing with the gears its suppose to be put in.
just because the "P" is highlighted doesnt mean the car is in park it could still be in reverse. that would mean your gear shift lever is broken and need to take it to a mechanic to fix it or replace it.
Go to the Prindle switch where the cable meets the transmission and check if it has not unhooked. Move the shifter all the way to the Park position and adjust/tighten.
It has a brake-transaxle shift interlock. You should just push the brake in to shift, but if you have done that, and it still won't shift, with foot on the brake, push the shifter all the way into park. Sometimes they don't always go into park all the way. Also if you park on a hill, it puts pressure on the btsi, so you cant shift it. Have someone push the vehicle back, just enough to take the pressure off and it should shift. I had this happen to me with my Grand Am.
IM A TECH AT A NISSAN DEALER I HAVE ONE RIGHT NOW WITH THE SAME PROBLEM IT TURNED OUT TO BE A SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT PART IS $131.00 THE UNIT SHORTS OUT AND DOESNT SEND A GROUND SIGNAL TO THE SHIFT LOCK SELONOID
THANKS ZAKK
Shifter assemblies are a common problem with these vehicles (floor shift models). An audible click should be heard in the shifter area when the brake pedal is depressed (if not, you may have an electrical issue in the btsi curcuit, see a qualified repair facility). Hope this helps you, good luck
