I have a Gateway computer desktop I rebooted it to factory settings running service pack 2 Windows XP no computer will not update from Windows Update site or download anything

Since April 2014 Microsoft ended support for Windows XP and that means no more updates for Windows.
You still can get from Microsoft's websites some of the updates and pacthes but you should look for specific files. As there are about 150 updates, I have way to help you giving the listing and anyway it would be some enless job to do. Maybe your best option should be to get Windows XP SP3 with all latest updates at some forum.
Anyway, keeping legal, if you reinstalled XP SP2 you should download and install SP3
Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT...

Windows Update still migth be usefult to get updates for MS Office 2007 and upwards, Windows Defender, etc..

You should forget about using Internet Explorer 8, it is obsolete by now and no way to update it. IE9 won't run on XP. So, far best option is Firefox

Tip

What Does It Mean When Support for My Operating System Ends?

Microsoft Support for Windows Vista (with no service packs installed) ended on April 13, 2010, while support for Windows XP (without Service Pack 3 installed) ended on July 13, 2010. Windows 2000 support ended on July 13, 2010 as well.
There is no Service Pack 3 for the 64-bit version of Windows XP. If you're running the 64-bit version of Windows XP with SP2, you have the latest service pack and will continue to be eligible for support and receive updates until April 8, 2014.
If you are still running a version of Windows where support has ended, it means that version of Windows will no longer receive any updates from the Windows Update or Microsoft Update site. These updates are generally provided for security reasons to help protect the PC from harmful viruses, spyware, malware, and other malicious software. Windows Update also provides new drivers for your hardware that can improve the reliability of Windows.
Hackers love to take a security vulnerability in Windows and exploit it to their advantage. So, if a vulnerability is found in Windows XP or Windows Vista and you are not running the latest service pack, you will not be protected and will be at risk.

How Can I Tell What Service Pack is Installed?
Follow these steps to discover what Service Pack is installed:
1) Click on the Start Button
2) Right-click on either My Computer or Computer (depending on your Windows version)
3) Click on Properties
On this window, it should tell you which version of Windows along with which service pack is installed). It should also tell you whether you are running a 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows.

Lost SP3 windows xp home edition version 2002 how do i get it back or do i need to I have automatic updates turned on when I look at programs beside it ,there no file size? also how do I fix error...

If you mean no file size showing up in "Add / Remove Programs"
thats because it's integrated / uninstallable but registered.

Error: 0x80070005, is that when you access "Microsoft Update"?

As for repairing SP3 Read more here:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/learn-how-to-install-windows-xp-service-pack-3-sp3

and you probably have to go for option:
"Manually installing SP3 using the Microsoft Download Center or a CD"
Good Luck

I lost my restore and internet

Microsoft issued Service Pack 2 and Service Pack 3 for XP to patch (and "improve") the OS. The list of patches and downloads for XP are here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/resultsForProduct.aspx?displaylang=en&ProductID=4c937a02-bae0-4317-a1a9-0c56cd979d05

You needed to install the service packs to continue accessing Microsoft's updates for your computer. Microsoft assumes you don't want to lose this data. You could get rid of the problem by reinstalling the entire OS from your current disc (if you have a full version, if you have an update version of XP you'll need the OS disc for Win95, Win98, WinMe or Win2K). Start with formatting the hard disc. However, you will lose the ability to contact MS for updates with Windows Update until you manually download and install the Service Packs (including SP3).

Alternatively you can build a new recovery disc for your current XP version, if you take the IT versions of the service packs. This takes several steps - first you need to copy all the files from the CD to a hard disc. Then you need to slipstream in the service packs. Then get the boot image files from the CD and create a new .iso with all of the files. For SP2, http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp has more information on the details.

If you want to add the SP3, you need to add the following set of steps:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/xpsp3_slipstream.asp

I hope you can get your machine to function.

(if you have information that you want to save, you may want to try using a LiveCD with Unix with an external drive (optical or hard disc formatted as a FAT 32 drive) attached.)

HP site said load XP SP3 upgrade Utility for system with AMD Processors. When I load this Utility and check for It is showing message Your system does not meet minimum requirements for this update. Update...

This means that microsoft has deemed your computer as not having the system requirements for the service pack.
Could be something as simple as you haven't installed service pack 1 ans 2 yet..
I would use windows update on your start menu, take all the recommended updates, generally once the updates required for service pack 3 are installed , then the next time you run windows update it will look for the next set of updates. sometimes it takes 2 or 3 update sessions to get the one you want if you havent updated your computer in some time..

Savedump.exe error

Hi there
Savedump.exe is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32. The file is a Windows core system file. The program has no visible window. savedump.exe is a Microsoft signed file. Therefore the technical security rating is 4% dangerous.
Some malware camouflage themselves as savedump.exe, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder. Thus check the savedump.exe process on your pc whether it is pest. I recommend Security Task Manager for verifying your computer's security.

If you want to get the full potential of 64bit processor then you will have install XP X64 and yes i'm sure SP3 will install.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

On March 6, 2008 Microsoft released Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows XP. Service Pack 3 contains all of the important Windows updates from previous service packs as well as additional updates that were released after Service Pack 2. To install Windows XP Service Pack 3 from the Internet on a home desktop computer use the Windows Update feature. CAUTION: If you have an HP Pavilion, HP Media Center or Compaq Presario desktop computer that has an AMD processor, your PC might encounter a startup problem after installing SP3 (or SP3 will not download from Windows Update). Before attempting to install SP3, install sp37394 - Microsoft Windows XP SP3 Upgrade Utility for systems with AMD processors . Service Pack 3

Welcome to the FixYa Site!

Windows XP Service Pack 3 is a collection of updates designed by Microsoft to enhance the stability and performance of the Microsoft Operating System.

However there are critical things to check for , such as program compatibility and driver compatibility.

Its critical to disable Antivirus / Firewall Software and disconnect your network cable while performing this update to avoid outside online distractions :)

If your computer is working fine now, I would not update at this time. However , there may be a time where the only way to get updates is to update to SP3.

(This has been a policy since SP2 that only new updates are available to the newest Service Pack only)
