I have a GE frig., and I turn it off since the house was empty for ~2 months. Now the frig is not working. How can I re-start the frig.? I assume it is the compressor that is off too long? Just read some of the answers from this site. I am very new to this repair thing :-(

U say GE model says MAYTAG ok which one? two months turned off not a long time for comp.. probaly it is your timer it might need to be turned till comp. comes on. if that is it than replace defrost timer..ok

The frig has a defrost timer which activates an electric element which cyclially defrosts the evaporator in the freezer.If either the heating element or the defrost thermostat are faulty the freezer evaporator will freeze solid not allowing cold air circulation to the rest of the frig.
At a suiteable time empty fridge contents into insulated containers and turn fridge off at powerpoint and allow to fully defrost leaving doors open.The evaporator coil in frostfree is normally located behind the rear panel of the freezer.If you do not have defrost heater it will take 3-4 hrs for complete defrost.
After defrost turn fridge back on and make sure items to be returned to freezer are free from moisture and ice and keep freezer open for minimum of time as moisture will start building up onthe evapoator.
If the fridge works ok for a couple of days and the the original problem returns the problem is with defrost thermostat or defrost heater
Hi, If you are leaving for six months I would empty everything out and then unplug it..place a 2x4 or something like that in the door to keep it open a bit so it stays aired out while you are gone...
Keep in mind. If you know how to fix is good but if other will fix for you then it'll cost more to fix than just buy new one.

Those filters are for refrigerators that have heavily treated water in the household. You could have a filter that filters your water supply and not use the filter inside the frig. Why use both? Now, if your home is not filtered, you may need it. Check to see if the water supply line is crimped somewhere or frozen when it gets inside the frig.
You frig is not going through the defrost cycle. Locate the defrost timer and advance it to the defrost cycle.(one click). Empty the freezer and remove the rear panel. See if the defrost heater is starting to get hot. Located at the bottom of the evaporator. If getting hot, replace the timer. If not getting hot, unplug the frig and check the resistance across the defrost timer(should be a closed curcit when cold) and across the heater. If "0" resistance, replace heater.
When replacing the heater alwarys replace the defrost thermostat at the same time. Will save you work in the near future.
Does your locale have high humidity? If it does, there is no true way of stopping the build-up of frost (and ice). Unfortunately, water vapor condenses below the dew point (temperature at which vapor turn to liquid). This happens at higher temperatures in very high humidity environments. It is not as noticeable in the winter months when humidity is low, but the summer months are another story. Just like when you see water vapor on the outside of a glass of ice tea in the summer; you don't notice it as much in the winter months.

If there are no ice cubes stucked in the icemaker, you have to call GE for service. Your icemaker could be guaranteed for three months only.
