Situation: My battery has died. I would like to place my car in Neutral so that I can have another car give me a jump. Problem: I cannot place my car in neutral because my car will not allow me to push in the brake so that I may switch from Park to Neutral.

NO CAR TOLD YEAR,MAKE OR MODEL NOR VIN#
BATTERY IS DEAD. WHY AND HOW WHO KNOWS?
WE CHARGE THEM USING A TOOL CALLED CHARGER

AND IF THAT FAILS TO MAKE OLD BATTERY CRANK ENGINE
THE BATTERY IS REPLACED. NOW.

EML IS CALLED CEL.SES AND MIL LAMP
IN ENGLISH IT IS CHECK ENGINE LAMP.
IT JUST STARTS SO THERE IS THE 1 KEY TEST DONE.
WHEN IT STARTS AGAIN
WE WHIP OUT THE OLD DMM,VOLT METER.
AND CHECK BATTERY LUGS FOR 13 TO 15VDC AT IDLE
BELOW 13VDC THE ALTERNATOR IS DEAD OR ITS FUSES BLOWN.

THERE ARE 6 CAUSES OF NO CRANKS.
FUSE] BLOWN
BATTERY DEAD (IT IS)
KEYSWITCH BAD (ST PIN)
PRNDL SWITCH BAD (AKA. PARK NEUTRAL SWITCH)
CRANK IN NEUTRAL NOW, DOES ENGINE START?
STARTER RELAY BAD
STARTER BAD.
OR ANY WIRE ABOVE CONNECTED.

OR BAD BATTERY CABLES OR LUGS LOOSE OR RUSTY.
THE BATTERY WILL BE DEAD IF ALTERNATOR FAILS
OR ITS BELT IS LOST OR SLIPS OR ALTERNATOR FUSES BLOWN
MOST CARS IF ALT FAILS AND WE DRIVE 30 MINUTES AND ENGINE DIES, FOR DEAD BATTERY./ NIGHT TIME LESS.
AT IDLE THE DAYS CHARGE/BATTERY LAMP MUST NOT GLOW.

Alternator is the correct diagnosis.

You may have a bad alternator that's what charges the battery

Dangerous practice to try & jump a near dead battery

Always try charging a battery, that is only a couple years
old & not run down more than two or three times

If the battery is dead & reads less than 12 volts, have a parts
store test it or just replace it.

Jumping a cars battery is not a fix for anything,so I fail to
see how your lost & have not addressed the battery issue,
so you can continue on with other testing,if needed

Depending on what year it is you can not jump it straight from the battery it will fry computer compoents even cause a dead cell in the battery mess up the electronics in the alternator you have to jump it from the red box below the battery check owners manual on how to jump it

Pick up a “Mighty Jump” emergency jump starter that plugs into a cigarette lighter port in your car, or a similar product to give you enough power to hopefully start the car to move it and charge the battery.

I'm assuming the car is an Automatic. with the key in the on position you need to press the brake pedal to access neutral.

It sounds like that not only is the battery totally dead ,due to a high very internal resistance, but that the alternator has very low output. While car is idling in neutral, the alternator has just enough output to supply the ignition circuits but once in gear and the idle speed drops there is insufficient voltage to run engine so it stalls, It is the same when the lights are turned on as the alternator cannot supply enough to run lights so engine dies without enough drive for the ignition circuits. Try another battery or install a new one. Also have the alternator output checked as it could be the cause of the battery dying in the first place because it has not been maintaining charge as you drive. The alternator problem would be caused by either worn brushes and / or a faulty electonic voltage regulator which is mounted inside the alternator with the brushes.

you likely have a bad alternator ... many auto parts stores have equipment that can test that .. usually for free ... you can also check with a volt meter .. or by just using the headlights ... turn them on at idle .. then rev the engine a little .. the lights should brighten a bit .. you should repair or replace the alternator soon since the battery cannot withstand a deap discharge for long without damage .. when you jump the car to start .. leave the jumpers in place and run the other car for awhile to give your battery enough charge to get yoiu to the auto parts place (at least 15 minutes or more) .. call first to make sure they will do the test for you ... make sure the alternator belt is not broken or loose ..

check the neutral safety switch located on top of the transmission.
put the transmission to neutral to see if it start.
if it start in neutral then the switch is bad
