Black screen Canon powershot A70

The screen is totally black when I try to take a picture. The screen does work when I set it for viewing my old pictures.

No image on the viewing screen when getting ready to take a picture. What does show up there is some hazy horizontal lines. The batteries were charged just prior to trying to use it.

I am seeing the same problem. happened suddenly. changed
batteries, restarted camera, no luck. Camera has been
working fine for 4 1/2 years with no problem before now.
Screen is black when I try to take a picture but can view pictures
and upload/download pictures already in the camera, no problem.

Important Notice About Your Canon Product:

It has recently come to our attention that the vendor-supplied CCD image sensors used in this Canon digital camera may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all. While reports of this malfunction have been rare in the United States, we have determined that it may occur if the product is exposed to hot and humid environments.
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, products exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.

If you go to canon.com they have the instructions on who to contact
and how to send the camera in. I haven't done it yet but will report
on when I do.

Canon Powershot A70: LCD screen went blank - I can still access all menu functions (timer, resolution etc), but the screen is completely black otherwise. If i take a picture using the manual view finder,...

I had a A70 that would still take pictures, but the screen did not show a picture. I did some research and found that this is somewhat a common problems with some of the Canon Powershots to include the A70 where the LCD screens expire. I believe that if the camera gets too hot, such as being left in a vehicle the LCD seperates. I sent my camera to Canon and they fixed it for free. It took about 4-6 weeks to receive my camera back, and now it works perfectly. They did a great job on communicating with me, and fixing the issue. I think that alone is worth buying a Canon. The link below should help you.

Black screen

If you can view pictures that were already taken before you ran into these problems, it may be that the sensor has gone bad. Please see this link for your options. (If you're not in the USA, your regional Canon service organization should provide you the same options.)
