NEC ND-3550A won't read discs

I am having issues with my NEC ND-3550A DVD burner. for a while it would pick and choose which discs it would read but suddenly quit reading any discs at all. I have tried updating the firmware several times to no avail. I have also completely removed and reinstalled the drive and I have wiped and reinstalled windows none of which worked. It does show that it is there it just will not read any discs. any suggestions as to what i could do?

I found out that whenever I put my computer to sleep in S3 mode, after waking up, NEC wouldn't start (even after firmware update to 1.07). Problem can be overrided either by turning S3 off (put it to default S1) or by disabling and reenabling NEC DVD. This may help for some other problems also that are connected to kikoksky proposed solution (which btw didn't solve problem for me).
I created MS-DOS Batch file (.bat) with Microsoft's DevCon tool for this action:

cd "C:\Program Files\DevCon\i386"
devcon disable "IDE\CDROM_NEC_DVD_RW_ND-3550A____________________1.07____"
devcon enable "IDE\CDROM_NEC_DVD_RW_ND-3550A____________________1.07____"

Try this Step 1: Start Registry Editor loadTOCNode(3, 'resolution'); Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. Registry Editor starts. Step 2: Delete the Upper/lower Filters registry entry loadTOCNode(3, 'resolution'); 1. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. 2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet. 3. Expand Control, and then expand Class. 4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. 5. In the right pane (topic area), click UpperFilters.

Note An UpperFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the UpperFilters registry entry, you must click UpperFilters and not UpperFilters.bak. 6. On the Edit menu, click Delete. 7. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the UpperFilters registry entry: Are you sure you want to delete this value? The UpperFilters registry entry is removed from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry subkey.
do same thing to erase the lower filter then restart your computer

make sure that the dvd burner is getting enough power test all leads that are attached to the dvd burner including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or the drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd burner then plug them back in this should activate the found new hardware wizard or you might have to uninstall then reinstall your DVD/CD or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device Click start control panel administrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question mark ? right click you will have options to update driver, roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall hope this helps

Problem with NEC DVD

Cd's use a different file structure that dvd's. Dvd's use udf and cd's use cdfs. Try cleaning the drive with a cleaning cd and downloading the latest drivers for the drive from the NEC website for the easiest fix.

It may not be compatible with a dual layer disk, just the regular dvd-r or dvd-rw disks.

Have NEC 3550A DVD/rw. re-installed windows XP professional & all else.. DVD will not recognize most dvd discs.Got drivers from NEC.. still problem

Go to:
1. start > run > devmgmt.msc
2. Under DVD/CD Rom drives make sure it's installed (Uninstalled = Yellow icon)
If all drivers are applied correctly this could be a problem with the DVD Region Settings.
Go to:
1. start > run > devmgmt.msc
2. expand
3. find the device
4. right click > properties
5. go to dvd region tab
6. select the desired region
Warning: some drives only allow you to change it up to 5 or 4 times so be careful!
