The operating manual for the BC142XLT is on my "impossible to find" list, but scanners in the 14x series are nearly identical in programming and operation, so this manual will walk you through the programming steps

I NEED SCANNER CODES?

It depends on your location. Try this link http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db

You will also need to know if your state and city switched to digital.
If not then it should work fine, but if they did you will need a new scanner because you have an analog scanner. There is a big push to switch over to digital radios in police, firefighter, military because it's more secure to use.

Can I disconnect the squelch on a uniden scanner model# bc142xL? & will scanner still work?

Why would you try to disconnect the squelch? If you turn it one way, it does not work at all. If you don't get any sound it won't be caused by the squelch circuit. You really have to look somewhere else if you don't get any sound.

Scan button says all channels locked out

You need to press one of the number buttons to 'open-up' or turn on a bank of channels to scan (IF you already have channels progammed in Bank #1, then press 1 while scanning and those channels in that bank will scan)

Need a free printable user manual for Bearcat scnner BC142XL

Its so easy to use you really don't need a manual for the Uniden BC142XL scanner.

Turn it on. Push the "MANUAL" button to stop it from scanning.

Push number 1, then push "MANUAL" again. This should leave you on channel one.

Using the keypad enter the frequency you want to monitor, then push "E." Press "REVIEW" at anytime to see what frequency is programmed there. If the review button flashes 000.0000 on the LED readout display, you might be entering an invalid frequency. Refer to the list of acceptable frequencies in the Frequency Range Bands below.

Push "MANUAL" to step to channel number two. Enter the frequency. Push "E." Push "MANUAL" to step to channel three. Repeat this process until all the (10) channels are full, or you've run out of frequencies to enter.

Push "SCAN" to start automatically scanning the frequencies. The
radio will stop when it hears someone talking, and resume scanning two seconds after the conversation has stopped.

Frequency Range Bands:

20 to 29.7 MHz (10 Meter "Ham" Band)
29.7 to 50 MHz (VHF Low Band)
50 to 54 MHz (6 Meter Amateur Band)
136 to 144 MHz (Military Land Mobile)
144 to 148 MHz (2 Meter "Ham" Band)
406 to 420 MHz (Federal Government Land Mobile)
420 to 450 MHz (70cm "Ham" Band)
450 to 470 MHz (UHF Standard Band)
470 to 512 MHz (UHF "T" Band

If this helps, please take a moment to give us a rating -- and a rating of "very helpful" would be greatly appreciated.

I LOST MY MANUAL TO MY UNIDEN BEARCAT BC142XL CAN I GET A FREE REPLACEMENT?

A number of scanner manuals can be found online however I don't know the difficulty of finding it for this unit. More than likely if you need printed material sent to you it will cost you.

To program the BC142xl 10-channel scanner:

Press the Manual button. Continue to keep pressing the Manual button until you are at one of the ten channels you wish to program the frequency into

Press the E button

Enter the frequency you want to store in this channel

Press the E button - Your frequency is now stores in this channel.

To later see what frequencies you have stores use the Review button.
