Have netgear wireless attached to a desktop computer about 30 feet away, down a flight of stairs in a house. I have a wireless usb adapter attached to my computer. We have optium online and my speeds are always "LOW".. Ran all given scans--spysweeper, antivirus, scan disk, defrag, and I continue to clean up the older files. So need help!!

Sounds like you need to get a wireless access point and put it in the area where your getting a low connections. This will bring it up to 100%. Note you'll need to run LAN cable to it though. There are those called WDS type that doesn't need you to run the LAN cable. Dlink and Buffalo makes them. Now just to let you know these are expensive. I would stick to your brand Netgear makes them also.
