When we turn my sons DS on the light comes on green as normal, but the screens do not come on. We have tried charging and changing the games but still nothing.

My son may have dropped it and has failed to mention it, you know what 8 year olds are like.

If that is the problem can we fix it?

Thank you very much for your help, we will try as you have suggested.

Nicham,

If I understand it correctly, the screens are still dark.
Small question....was it dropped on the floor?

Your problem is most likely the processor. It is located under the Game slot. The processor is soldered on the systemboard and one of the tiny connections is for 99% sure broken. You cannot repair that yourself.
The only solution is exchange the systemboard (buy a defective one on eBay for example) or send it to Nintendo for repair or exchange.
It's the only way I'm affraid
You can test if it is the processor by opening the bottom part of the case and put a battery on the systemboard and push it against the battery connector (the batteryslot is removed by removing the bottom casing). Now press firmly with your finger on top, and in the middle, of the Game Slot and turn the DS Lite on. If lucky the screens turn on as would it be working normally. When removing your finger, the DS Lite freezes or the screens are going black again.

When my son turns on his DS Light the green power light comes on and that is it. The screens remain blank and there is no sound.

Hinge is broken! That or the screen is broken. You can replace the screens. If that hinge is broken it's over.

Yes, this problem is normally caused by one or both of the fuses have blown on the logic board.

well repairing is not ez and the issue maybe worse then you can handle. so i say check ur warranty as that will cover it, ur warranty is usually threw the store you bought it from.

Second call nintendo as they will be able to actually repair the product, im sure they will charge you, but they will also put a guarantee the repair. good luck

Green light, black screens, no sound, needs new battery???

The alarm is just a coincidence i suspect, green light comes on and stays on probably not the battery at fault. It would be red.
If the green light goes out and screens just flash one of your screens are at fault or a loose ribbon connection.

Nintendo DS lite power light comes on but both screens stay dark?

When you boot the Nintendo DS you can change the illumination settings in the main menu.
One the main menu, you will find a sunny symbol in the lower left corner of the screen. Click on that and you should be able to change the level of illumination. If you are also wondering if you can change the brightness during game play, you can't. Games such as Mario 64 DS come with support for brightness change but otherwise you have to do it before game play.

Is this a terminal problem

It could be that your son dropped the DS. The screens are probbably not dead, but a connection may have come loose. The screen connection cables, especially the LCD power ribbon, are sensitive. You can try disassembling the DS by following any of numerous disassembly toutorials (search Google!) and make sure everything looks normal, that is, all the ribbions are tight.
