I keep getting a false paper jam and I have followed the steps in clearing a paper jam. there is no paper jam, however when I put the duplex cartriage back into the printer and press ok to clear it now...

If you have cleared off the paper jammed within then it is possible that errors have crept into the drivers. sometimes the printer driver software can have errors while being in use or is shut down. So to reset remove your printer from the PC and uninstall the printer software. Now reinstall the printer software and then connect the Printer to be detected as a new hardware as it will be installed. Now check the printer properties to see the ink levels.
Activate head cleaning before a test is taken . Also check the mechanical settings of the ink cartridge , if jammed or tight remove motor and manually free the drive before it is set back.

Have a 5100 error on a canon pixma mx 860 printer

There are a few issues that cause a 5100 error code. 1) The encoding strip may need cleaning. 2) There is a paper jam. 3) The printer may need to be reset by turning it on and off. 4) The ink tanks may need to be properly snapped into their carrier. 5) The printer may need service.

The solutions to try
1) Cleaning the encoder strip. Use a cotton swab and isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) or window cleaner. A flashlight will help you see any grease on the encoding strip. With the printer on, open the printer by lifting the scanner unit until it locks. Unplug the power cord from the printer and wait until the LEDs are no longer lit. At this point you will be able to slide the cartridge carrier back and forth. To start, slide the carrier to the right. Look for the clear plastic strip (the encoding strip) in front of the carriage drive belt and look for any grease or other dirt on the strip. Remove the grease with a cotton wab moistened with the isopropanol. Look at the strip from several angles to check for any grease along the entire strip. Make sure you do not remove the grease from the chassis (metal rail). Move the cartridge carrier to the left and check the right side of the strip. When all of the grease is removed, lift the scanner unit support and close the unit. Plug in the power cord and turn the unit back on. Often grease gets on the encoder strip when you remove a paper jam. If you proceed to the next step, you may have to repeat this cleaning.

2) A paper jam
Carefully pull any sheet from the rear tray or paper output slot. Detach the rear cover and fully extend the rear tray support and try to pull the paper out slowly. Otherwise try turning the printer off and on - the sheet may be ejected. Remove the paper cassette and pull any paper out slowly that is in the front area. If needed, try removing the paper cassette and any paper in the rear tray. Then turn off the printer and unplug it. Set the unit upright on the left side and try to pull the paper out. Return the printer to the usual position when done. Replace the cassette, plug in the power cord and then turn on the printer. This will delete any documents in the printer queue. Check for foreign objects around the paper output slot. Remove any foreign objects with the unit off. Close the rear cover completely. Make sure that the paper isn't curled up.

3) Turn the unit off, unplug the power cord and wait 10 seconds or longer. Plug in the power cord and press the On button. Wait until the printer completes the cycling process before trying to print again.

4) Verify that the ink tanks are properly seated. With the printer on, lift the scanning unit up until it locks. Press on the black circle on each ink tank until it snaps firmly into place. Check if the ink lamps light up red. Make sure the protective shipping covers was removed from the ink tanks. If the unit has the remaining ink level detection feature disabled, replace the ink tanks. Close the scanning unit.

5) If none of the above solutions work, contact Canon if the unit is under warranty. Otherwise, decide if the service is worthwhile for an out-of-warranty printer.

I hope this helps.

If the paper tears when you try to remove it, open the scanning unit with the printer on and unplug the printer. Then look for and remove the paper. Use a flashlight to check for paper and other foreign objects in the corners. Slide the cartridge carrier back and forth to check the corners completely.

For pictures check the support site: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/printers_multifunction/office_all_in_one_inkjet_printers/pixma_mx860#ServiceAndSupport . Search for the error code 5100 and then follow the links.

Carrier jam on printer

There could be 4 possibilities.

1. Ink cartridges lids are open which is not allowing cartridges to move freely.
2. Ink cartridges carriage will not move from its original position(left) when front cover is opened
3. Encoder strip is Dirty.
4. Encoder strip is Out of position.

Solution:
1. Open the front cover and check if ink cartridges lids are properly snapped in.

2. Turn the printer off and pull out the power cable from power socket, open the front cover and manually center the ink cartridges carriage.
Clean the metallic rod inside the printer using WD40 or Kleenex from Left corner to right corner properly.

3. Cleaning the encoder strip:
a. printer should be off and disconnected from power.
b. open the front cover.
c. Using a dry, lint free cloth, pinch the encoder strip on the right-hand side of the cartridge carriage and pull your fingers across it toward the right-hand side of the printer and you can move the cartridges carriage to clean the strip completely.
d. Note: The encoder strip is a narrow band of clear plastic and can be difficult to see without direct lighting running parallel to metallic rod.
e. Close the printer and try again to print.

4. Repositioning the Encoder strip.
a. Remove the power cord from the printer.
b. Open the front cover.
c. Gently slide the ink cartridge carrier to the middle of the printer.
d. Gently move the top part of the printer belt to the right.
e. Using an index finger, gently push encoder strip down and then back up, to get it back into the slot located on the back of the ink cartridge carrier.
f. Gently press the strip first to the rear, and then forward, to ensure that it is seated correctly.
g. Manually move the ink cartridge carrier to the left, then to the right, to check the positioning of the encoder strip.
h. Once the encoder strip has been re-seated, close the scanner lid.
i. Re-connect the power cord to the printer and try again to print.

Check if the Encoder Strip is Broken or Missing
1.Power down the printer and unplug the power.
2.Slide the cartridge carrier inside the printer a couple of inches to the left.
3.Locate the encoder strip (Figure 1) on the right-side of the cartridge carrier encoder strip
Note:
The encoder strip is a plastic strip with small markings over its entire length. The strip may appear to be translucent.

Reposition the Encoder Strip
1. Remove the power cord from the printer.
2. Lift the scanner unit to expose the inside, where the printer cartridges are located.
3. Gently slide the ink cartridge carrier to the middle of the printer.
4. Gently move the top part of the printer belt to the right.
5. Using an index finger, gently push encoder strip (Figure 1) down and then back up, to get it back into the slot located on the back of the ink cartridge carrier.
6. Gently press the strip first to the rear, and then forward, to ensure that it is seated correctly.
7. Manually move the ink cartridge carrier to the left, then to the right, to check the positioning of the encoder strip.
8. Once the encoder strip has been re-seated, close the scanner lid.
9. Re-connect the power cord to the printer.

Ensure the Paper Tray is Not Overfilled
Each printer tray has a maximum capacity rating, and this rating is based on a specific paper weight and or thickness. Consequently, situations might arise in which the tray will not be able to accommodate the maximum number of sheets listed in the printer specifications. Verify that the paper is not packed too tightly in the paper tray.

Try to see if there're any Paper Pieces left while you were removing the rest of them. If you find there any, remove then retry. If this fails, contact the Service Center.

I455 Canon printer

your problem is due to gummed ink jets.. take out your ink cartriage and clean the bottom of it. make sure you avoid cotton or anything that would leave lint behind. also clean your shuttle. some shuttles you can pivot off from the track to clean and others you just can clean the tracks. make sure there is no ink gummed up on the tracks or the bottom of your cartriage
