I am having a similar problem.  I am not able to print, I changed the cartridge after the computer said that the cartridge was not compatible.  It was weird because i am using the correct and same cartridge I have been using for years.

    Please help.  Thank you,

I had the same problem, and the cause turned out to be the cover switch not being fully pushed in. On the underside right edge of the top cover, there's a little triangular protrusion that pushes down a black rectangular button (the cover switch) when the cover is closed. The problem occurs because the flimsy top cover is made of plastic and flexes slightly when you close it. This means that sometimes, the right edge of the cover won't seat properly even though it appears as if the cover is closed all the way. When this happens, the triangular protrusion isn't fully pressing the switch down.

To test if this is this is happening, send a print job to the printer and wait for the "top cover is open" error message to appear. Next, open the top cover door and locate the cover switch. It's a little black button in a rectangular hole at the right edge of the doorway near the ink cartridges. Take a pen or a car key and use it to push the cover switch down. You can also use your fingertip to do this if it's skinny enough. If you keep the cover switch pressed down, the power button should start blinking to indicate a print job is coming through. If the print job actually starts printing, then you know the problem was the cover switch.

In my case, all I had to do the fix the problem was close the cover and make sure it was fully seated by firmly pressing down the right edge of the cover until I heard a plasticky "click" noise. After that, the problem went away.

Hope this helps.

When I try to print, I get the error: Top Cover Open: The printer cannot print because the top cover is open. How do I fix this?

Hi cduckyquack ,

  • All you need to do is close the printer cover if it's open , once it's closed you should be able to print correctly without any warning messages.
  • If the cover is closed and still you are getting the same message , then it might be a problem with the censor switch which indicates to the printer whether or not the cover is open, so if the switch / sense has gone faulty then you need to repair it.
  • Sometimes just because of dust the printer does not sense the cover being closed and it results in the error message that you have described.
  • Hope this helps ...) your feedback would be appreciated.

hi there!

make sure that the top cover of your hp deskjet is fully closed, open it up again, check for any obstruction then make sure you hear the snap sound when you close it back. if you're in the usa, you can contact 800-hp invent for technical support especially if the printer is still in warranty!

My hp deskjet 5150 doesn't print. I get a message on screen that the lid of the device is open although it's not

On the right side of the printer's cover is a small plastic "v" shape piece, That piece activates a swith that tells when the cover is open.
With time that piece wears-out, so the solution is to replaced the cover or wrap that piece with scotch tape (one single turn will be enough).

Getting message Top Drawer Open-will not print

the sensor that allows the printer to know when the drawer is open or closed could be broken. You may need to have your printer looked at by a technician or if you can locate the sensor either remove it or see if it has come out of place.

Error message top cover open

When the printer is used often, and ink and dust accumulate inside, the detector switch will sometimes get stuck and won't be depressed by the cover correctly. Open the cover and look right next to the sticker. There is a small rectangular hole with the switch. Use a very thin tool like a small screwdriver or paperclip bent open to push the switch inside the hole to the back of the printer. Do NOT push it just down! You *must* move the switch away from you. Hold the switch in this position and close the cover. Carefully pull out your tool from the gap.

Hi,
If you turned the machine off and replaced the cartridge, you can get this error.

Could you try the following procedure below please to clear the error, thanks.
  1. Turn on the unit.
  2. Open the top cover to access the print cartridges.
  3. Remove the new cartridge that is causing the message.
  4. Reinsert the cartridge and close the cover. The following message will appear on the front panel: "Press 1 for new cartridge or press 2 for a used cartridge."
  5. Press the 1 on the numeric keypad of the HP product.
If the message, press 1 for new cartridge or press 2 for a used cartridge, "does not appear after removing and reinstalling the new cartridge, and the low ink warning message still displays,

follow the steps below:
  1. Turn on the unit.
  2. Open the top cover to access the ink cartridges.
  3. After the cartridges stop moving, unplug the power cord.
  4. Remove both cartridges and close the top cover.
  5. Plug the power back in. The unit will reinitialize and a message will appear to insert the cartridges.
  6. Open the top cover and reinsert the ink cartridges. Close the top cover. The message,
  7. Press 1 for new cartridge or press 2 for a used cartridge," should appear.
Hope this helps
Regards.

Top cover open error when printing

I had the same problem and fixed it by sticking the end of a pen (the writing part) in the hole on the right side when you open the top cover.

In other words if you open the top cover and look on the top cover you will see a tab that goes into a hole(the hole is next to the picture of the print cartridges). There is a hole with switch/tab(I don't know the proper terminology) on it that is activated when you close the top cover. If you stick the end of a pen in that hole it should activate something and the print cartridges will start to make noise and move around. You can then close the cover and it should close all the way.

You can then try to print a test page.

Good Luck
