If you are talking about the idler pulley, which isn't a pulley at all, it is highly recommended that you replace it with a standard idler pulley. This was orginally designed as an attempt to save money by the manufacturer, but turned out to cause premature belt wear in many cases. A replacement idler assembly (part number 691366) is a better option. As far as reinstalling the dryer belt, you can find diagrams at under the "Special Features" section under "Repair Help". There is a link for "Dryer Belt Diagrams". Your dryer is manufactured by Whirlpool. Your diagram will be either "H" or "K" depending on how the dryer is constructed. If your dryer has a removeable back panel, use "H". If dryer does not have a removeable back panel, use "K". HINT: Most dryers with removeable backs have the lint screen on the top of the dryer. If you need additional assistance, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

PS The replacement idler pulley can be found at if you wish to order on line. Just type in the part number I provided. Just make sure you pay attention to the item description. That parts costs about $13. If you do not wish to order on line the website also provides a service where you can perform a search by local stores based on your zip code.

I have a Kenmore Dryer Model number 66902691 that has a burning smell when it is running. All lint was just cleaned out of it, but it is still smelling!

This might be caused by a seized idealer pully, located on the bottom of the dryer drum. A belt wrapes around the drum and across the idealer pully and then on the motor pully. If the idealer is not turning freely, it creates friction and eventually burns the belt in half.
Hope this helps

Look up "Tension Pully & Belt Diagram" on internet for your dryer on google or Dogpile. You should be able to find how to
put the Tension Pully back where it belongs & how to thread the belt through it and back on to the motor drive shaft. Check different sites for the right picture for your dryer. Here's a picture to get you started. Good luck,

Model# 110.72602101 Kenmore Dryer I had ordered the belt replacement but the instructions show an Idler Pully but I don't seem to have the wheel that goes on it. Not sure how this belt is to be...

you must have the older style pulley that's all metal with no wheel.rap the belt around the drum,on the side where the pulley is pinch the belt together stick it under the half moon part of your metal pulley and stick the looped end around the motor shaft,if i were you i'd call the place where you bought the belt from give them the model number and order a belt kit,you get the belt, the rollers and the pulley with the wheel not that metal **** piece and replace it,you get all those parts for short money, cheaper than buying them seperate or use it for now until it starts getting noisy.let me know how you make out and if you need anymore help let me know

Cant install my belt back on my idler pully on my kenmore 80 series dryer . the idler pully i have is a piece of metal below but it does not open up so the belt will go through. i am missing something but...

Howdy: Check for the bolts that hold the pully on. Loosen the bolts and the pully should stat to open. You may have to put on the belt then install the pully. Look close at it. Good luck - Doug

Is there an adjustment on the kenmore 4179172000

The thing that you should now when taking on a repair on a "skyscraper" like thses, is that they are a monster to repair!! There is no "adjustment". The manufacturer (Whirlpool from the looks of your Model #) has a "fixed" tension on these units so they cannot be tampered with. You would need to purchase a repair manual that matches the unit you have to take you step-by-step. Plus, you can't just go by the size. The belt has to be ABSOLUTELY EXACT as the original. Did you get the belt from Sears or a third-party?

Makes squeaking noise after running for about 10 minutes

you can check a lot of things. the motor itself, the rollers on the back, and the main bearing at the center of the drum. you can apply any lubricants to all of those rolling parts.
