Question about Sanyo DRW-500 DVD Recorder

Sanyo DRW-500 Home DVd Player/Recorder

I have owned this unit for four years and it has worked well until the last year when the motor spin-up started failing in the drive. It finally died altogether and I attempted to repair the NEC ND-1100A DVD-RW drive inside the unit but the motor is completely gone. I attempted to replace the drive with an Optorite DD0201 I have but the unit hardware refused to recognize the drive.

Since the NEC ND-1100A is no longer available except through rebuilds that cost more than the unit is worth, are there any other drives that will work with this unit so I can get it back online again?

I solved my own problem and it took a lot of tinkering but in the end the solution was so simple I didn't think of it until last: You can put ANY DVD-RW replacement drive in the unit as long as you remove the factory set jumper on the back of the unit from CS (Cable Select) to MS (Master) and any unit will work perfectly in the DRW500. Apparently the chip set is pretty generic for interface with any DVD-RW on the market.

So all you folks who own this recorder can extend the life of it indefinitely as long as the chip set and the power supply will last.

In truth, the cheap and obscure Optorite DD0201 DVD-RW works much better and smoother than the original NEC ND-1100A which is a total piece of ca-ca that doesn't even maintain firmware upgrades anywhere on the net. I pulled it from an old computer that had bit the dust and a customer left it behind after I built them a new unit. I recoomend that anyone who still has and uses the Sanyo DRW500 get rid of the NEC internal drive and replace it with almost any of the newer and cheaper units available on the market from $29.95 and up. The NEC was hinky from the beginning, to say the least, and it never performed as well as the cheap Optorite I replaced it with. I found the problem with the NEC drive which was unrepairable due to a defective bus connector that controlled the read/write laser head. It was so brittle that heat eventually caused it to fracture and fixing it would have been a bigger pain than just replacing the whole unit so I figured that by tinkering with it I might find a solution and I did.

So don't throw that old DRW500 unit away when you can fix it cheaply and use it for many years to come.

The only down-side is that many DVD-RW son't have the disc slide drawer mounted as low as the NEC did so you might not be able to use the original drawer cover that was used on the NEC because most are too high up and caused the unit to jam when the door closes. Other than that I'm very happy I got the old girl working again!!
