Black soot on plastic in dishwasher

I washed a load as normal and now have all plastic items as well as the dishwasher tub coated in a black soot. Does anyone know what this is? Is it a broken charcoal filter or something and how do I fix it?

Seems to be the rubber on the seals melting. I'm trying to replace the rubber gasket on the bottom around the sump.. I can't get the new gasket and assmbly to fit into the pit. Guess it's time for a new washer.

Oh ... and by the way .... it's a 4 year old Maytag dishwasher. My 4 year old Maytag microwave broke, too. My 2 year old maytag oven broke. My 1 year old Maytag dryer broke. My 4 year old Maytag clothes washer operates poorly. Moral of the story ... DON'T BUY Maytag/Whirlpool!!

  • shane May 25, 2013

    I repeat ... DO NOT BUY MAYTAG/WHIRLPOOL

  • shane May 25, 2013

Seems to be pretty glaring evidence that Maytag and Whirlpool(same company) make poor quality products.

You can get a product called dishwasher majic. It is used to clean the tub of a dishwasher. Big box stores (LOWES, HOME DEPOT) should have it. There is not charcoal in the unit. I suspect is grease from the rubber seal around sump assembly.

A couple of thoughts:

1) It could be a gasket somewhere starting to break down. Check your door seal.

2) Food particles could have gotten caught somewhere in the drain hose, or something, and then turned black with mold and bacteria, then when you wash, they get siphoned back into the dishwasher if the flap which composes the anti-siphon check valve on the drain hose is starting to stick open.

Try putting a cup of bleach in the top rack and run a complete cycle with no other dishes in it. Then, load up some plastic dishes and wash them as normal. See if that helps. If it does, replace your check valve.

Also, insure that your drain hose is looped up above the bottom of your sink to prevent debris from your garbage disposal backing up into your dishwasher.

Good luck and keep us posted!

drain hose should be attached to drain under the sink. pull it loose from that drain should be a small hoe with a black end on it. use a wire coat hanger to run through the hose to loosen clog.

Have cleaned rotary arms etc but still getting black specks insie cups and glasses. Is it safe to use a small amount of baking powdwer in the machine and then run it through a washing cycle (empty)?

Yes, you can use baking soda, I use it at work especially on the models with plastic tubs.
The black specks may be rust or a shutoff valve that is failing. (The water supply lines).

Has to do with the detergent you are using is not completely breaking down the food materials being removed from the dishes during washing. I ran the dishwasher empty through a pot and pans cycle with maximum options and some bleach, Cleaned it to like new condition and from now on I use a detergent that has bleach in it. Cascade has several different products to cover this.

Mold growing on dishes

Recommend that you run another cycle with no DW soap aded, waiting until the dishwasher has filled with hot water and begins to do the first wash cycle. Then add 1/2 cup of bleach to the water and close the door. Allow the cycle to finish. Run it normally with a standard load of dirty dishes. Note: These high efficiency dishwashers count on the "dirt" of the dirty dishes to help wash/clean the dishes. Recommend you not rinse/wash the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher.

Watch for any occurrence of the black dots and repeat the bleach treatment.

BOSCH DW burned plastic smell, common problem?

Hello,
I have this exact same smell issue from the back black panel at rear of dishwasher (free standing so easy to pinpoint. I replaced the old bosch with this Bosch (approx 12 months ago) for the same reason, and am extremely disappointed to have the same issue. It is almost as though the black insulation material is disintegrating? I wonder what it is made from? Smells noxious. It is very hot to touch during a cycle too. Good luck,
Fiona

Leaking washing machine

It leaksYour washer can develop several types of leaks. You can track down a leak based on when it occurs:

During fill only
During drain and spin only
All the time

During fill only
If the washer leaks only during the fill cycle, check these:

Air-gap device -The air gap is a small device found on most washers that prevents the wash water from being siphoned into the household water supply. It's located either mid-way along or at the end of the black rubber hose that comes from the water-inlet valve. Often it's made of translucent plastic. If one of the air-gap components deforms or cracks, you may need to replace it.

The tube -There's a rubber tube that runs between the water-inlet valve and either the air-gap or the inlet spout. If it cracks or breaks, it can cause a leak.

Inlet spout -Most washers have a plastic spout near the top of the main clothes tub that directs the water into the tub. If the spout cracks or breaks free of its mounting, it can cause a leak.

During drain and spin only
A washer that leaks only during the spin cycle often has a leak in the main drain hose. Inspect the entire hose and correct any problem you find. Alternatively, the steel or plastic outer tubs can rust, split, or be punctured. This may be most visible during large loads and high water levels. If this happens, you may have to replace the entire outer tub--but that may not be an economical repair to make. Consult a qualified appliance repair technician for further details.

All the time
If the washer leaks all the time, check these:

Hot and cold water fill hoses - Check the hot and cold water hoses from the household plumbing. If either hose is leaking, tighten it or replace it, as appropriate.

Main tub seal - The main tub seal is located between the transmission and the outer tub. It's the primary water seal in the outer tub for the transmission-shaft entry point. If this seal leaks, you can see the leak by opening up the machine's main access panel while the machine is full of water with a small amount of detergent in it. The leak appears at the underside of the outer tub, at or near the center. This seal is difficult to replace. You probably should call a qualified appliance repair technician.

Pump - If the pump leaks, you can probably spot the leak when the tub is full of water. The pump has two or more black rubber or plastic hoses attached to it and usually has a drive belt that spins the pump. If the pump is leaking, you need to replace it.

Outer tub - Over time, the steel or plastic outer tubs can rust, split, or be punctured. If this happens, you may have to replace the entire outer tub--but that may not be an economical repair to make. Consult a qualified appliance repair technician for further details.

Black spots on plastic items

I have the same problem on my Bosch dishwasher Model # SHX33A05UC. It is about 6 years old. I have replaced three gaskets and it did not solve the problem. I am a 25 year mechanical engineer. I do not recommend anyone changing these gaskets on their own except for the long dishwasher door gasket (which goes along the top, left and right door edges) which is quite easy to replace. The other two gaskets, which were quite difficult to replace, were the gasket at the bottom of the dishwasher door and the sump pump gasket. I am still having the tar like black tiny dots depositing on my plastic tupper wear on the second shelf. I will likely not buy a Bosch dishwasher ever again. I will make my decision after hearing what Bosch tech support has to say about what I need to replace next. Could it be the rubber drain check valve not operating correctly? I need to find out. I have spent so much time trying to solve this black tar dot problem!!!

Kenmore Ultra Wash Model 665 Dishwasher

Dishwashers which are properly installed and regularly used won't normally have a problem with bad odors. Check the following: ?Was the drain hose brought in at the top of the cabinet, or down near the floor? it must be 34" from the floor. ?Do you run the unit at least once every 2 days? -Run a cycle with a quart of vinegar to clean the tub and pump. ?Does the disposal tend to back up slightly when the dishwasher drains? Drain may be clogged. -Don't use gel detergent! ?Check your water softener(If so equipped) These can cause foul odors in the water supply if not properly balanced or maintained Good luck!
