Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

I have a Quad 99 amp and it has lately started making a loud pop when I turn it off. It also does this sometimes during playing of cd but much more of a cracking sound (like interference) - other times its fine.

Error-99 shows on screen then turn system off

Error 99 is CD not up to speed. Either the CD is slipping, Defective CD, pickup is unable to read sectors and is either dirty pickup or pickup going bad.

Is it always the same CD you are playing? Is the CD smudged with finger prints or dirty? If not suspect the CD itself. This will require Repair or Replace, as E-99 is a classic malfunction & unit will need to be taken apart, "unless" there is a CD stuck in the Unit.

If you have loaded a Blank Cartridge & clicked Eject & found no extra CD, then you will need to have a Reputable Shop Repair Typically this is the Logic I.C. & / or the Servo Motor. Sometimes you can find the same Unit on E-Bay, Craigs List, etc for less than Repair

Changer Error Codes:
E-00: Poor Cable connection.
E-01: Magazine not properly set in changer.
E-02: No Disc in magazine.
E-03: CD does not have selected track number.
E-04: Disc is dirty, upside down or unreadable.
E-10: No data is recorded on the MD. The player plays the next disc automatically.
E-99: Changer malfunction, disc may be caught in machine or changer requires service.

Hope this helps. Your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

I have had a Denon AVR 588 for some time now. Lately, when I play a movie in the DVD player or play a CD, it sometimes powers off into protection mode. I have a fan on it for ventilation and the unit is...

What I think is happening is that you have a fault in the main amp somewhere which after a while gets hot and creates an overload situation. It's going to be a tricky thing to spot unless you have a good knowledge of electronics. For example Capacitors can cause such faults. Sometimes you can spot them with the eye. For example the top of them might be bulging out. But unless you know, take it to a trained technician.

Two problem don't know if they're related. I'll sometimes get the dreaded loud POP and then no sound when playing from our cable box or Ipod, I'll lose sound on the speakers in the main room but I still...

I have the same two problems! "Zone 2" works, but the main amp will make a noise and then stop working. Sometimes when I change the listening modes around it will start working. Lately, though, "zone 1" has gone out altogether.

After hour of playing the amp starts the effect popping sound

there is an open connection, most likely right off the input jack ,causing this issue. Resolder it or retension the jack connection.

Your amp is going into protection. The click you hear is a relay meant to protect your speakers and stereo. Check your speakers with an ohm meter for the the proper ohms ( listed on the speaker ) and physically try to push each woofer and midrange cone in gently to make sure it moves and is not stuck or frozen in place. A speaker may read correctly on an ohm meter if the woofer is ok but if the tweeter or midrange is not working it will cause the amp to go into protection mode. When you play music stick your ear up to each tweeter\midrange\woofer to ensure they are working.
Your stereo could also be the culprit although usually if it plays music it is ok as long as you are not hearing loud pops. Loud pops are voltage spikes that indicate that a transistor\IC is breaking down and will eventually short. Good luck!
