Printer Copy Mode

I have a HP Photosmart C7280. I have tried every way to get an A4 original to reduce to A5 in the copy mode. I had Paper source on automatic and 'to fit page' as described in 'help' but whatever I do it tells me to put in correct size paper . I also tried reducing by 50% with the same result. Please help!
The size listings are not UK.

Also the carriage movement is very squeaky. I have only had the Printer for six weeks.
