Gasket will not seal after being removed for cleaning.

After you take the gasket out and wash it how do you put it back in ?.......The little clips on each side of the lid keep the gasket from going in all the way around..............It is impossible to push the gasket in behind these clips (or whatever you call them)...................What is the secret ?
