I amtrying to clean the lens of my sony cd rom but I can't get it to start. The instructions say to push play but that is not an option

That is not the case it will not start with a dirty lens

That is not the case. If it would automatically start then I could clean the lense. I guess I just wasted 9 bucks

Hi,
see if the player tries to read the disc. Load a disc and listen.
Does the player make squealing noises or is it totally quiet? Squealing noises may indicate that the player is trying to synchronize with the disc but can't due to an obstruction on the lens or in the laser path inside the pickup or a defect in the pickup. This can also be caused by an intermittent signal problem due to a faulty ribbon cable.
Totally silent means that the photo sensor is not getting any usable input from the laser at all, meaning that the pickup is "blind" for lack of a better word.
This can be caused by an obstruction of the beam by foreign matter on the lens or inside the pickup all the way to a marginal or failed laser diode and/or photosensor array. This can also be caused by a bad ribbon cable with one or more severed traces.
You could try to clean the optics. This is the most common malfunction as far as i know in all disc players. It would involve taking the cover off and finding a way to expose the lense, and then cleaning it with a very gentle brush. some players have a cover for the lense that swings to the side during playing, this greatly reduces the chance of dust accumulating, but its still worth the try.
If you actually see dust on the lense, then its just that simple. clean, close, play.
It may also be worth your while to check on the small shafting that guides the carriage of the laser pickup. Dirt, grome, dust and solidified lubricant can cause stoppage of the carriage and the laser eye then fails to read the next track. Please refer to the image i have attached.

Hello there,
I'm going to make a few assumptions here. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Your CD-ROM is a single disk player (not multi)
Your Lens Cleaner is the CD-ROM type (with a very fine brush adhered to the underside, add a couple drops of alcohol, press PLAY)
Your CD Player is a self contained unit. Like a PC would use.
CD Lens Cleaners can work great......or not. Depends on how dirty the lens was when you started.
Before inserting the cleaner, check the it for scratches or debris that may be stuck to it from the last use.
After you put it in, the player needs a couple seconds to read the Table Of Contents.
If the player doesn't recognize your cleaner, there are still options.
I usually take two or three different types (brands) of these cleaners on service calls. Where one fails, sometimes another succeeds.
When they all fail, it's time for a manual cleaning.
You will need a small phillips screwdriver, cotton balls, isopropyl alcohol.
The idea is to expose it's inner workings (get to the lens to clean it).
This may necessitate the extraction of the CD Player from its normal environment (PC, stereo component, etc). You will also need whatever tools needed perform this.
If you provide me some more detail, I can walk you through it.
Procedure (self contained unit):
- Disconnect it from power
- Remove the four screws holding the top cover on.
- Remove the top cover
- Near the center you will find a near square piece of plastic. You should be able to see a small worm gear in a slot within its perimeter. The lens (small round bluish glass) slides back and forth along this worm gear. This is your target.
- Take a cotton ball and lightly dampen it with alcohol.
- Gently swirl it over the lens.
- Take another cotton ball (dry)
- Gently swirl it over the lens.
- Place the cover back on
- Screw it back together
- Reconnect the wiring and power it up.
- Retry your player with a CD (or the cleaner again)
If you need additional info for whatever reason, let me know.
Hope you found this useful.
Thanks for using FixYa
Mike

HI-
Chances are there is something wrong with the disc or with the player itself-
for troubleshooting, try a different CD
-try unplugging the cd rom from the system and reattached it.
If all fails have it service, if its within the warranty you can call your manufacturer for your cd-rom
Thanks for using Fixya!
