SAFE MODE: Place your finger on the on/off sensor leave it their until you machine turns off then take your finger off, place your finger back on the on/off sensor leave it their until you hear 2 consecutive beeps then take your finger off. Once in safe mode select the option PS3 System Restore. NOTE: The system restore will delete all of your saved game data I recommend backing up you system if you can.
Taking you PS3 lid off and placing a fan over the top won't cool anything except the Blue-Ray deck and power supply if anything is causing an overheat it would be under the metal plate that those 2 components are sitting on and even then the overheating is on the underneath side of the motherboard where the heat-sink fan is. If the system is getting to hot it has a safety feature and your PS3 will turn off usually causing the YELLOW LIGHT OF DEATH which would force you to take your console down the motherboard and do a flux and reflow of the board. Good Luck!
