Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

Is it my Wireless or my Neighbor's??

I somehow lost my wireless connection that I named "PRINCESS". Ive been using it for years. After updating my LiveCare One on Window's Vista, my "Princess Network" disappeared. I'm now using the ethrenet cable to get a connection to the modem (which works great).

I can see wireless networks in my condo building...all are secured except one...can I secure this one as mine or could it possibly be a neighbor's ?
How do I tell if the unsecured network named "LINKSYS" is mine?

SOOO LOST,
james

Just to make sure I understand your question. You did have a wireless connection/ Network set up from your wireless router, right? That being the case, do you know how to connect to your router using ethernet cable? Let me know and I will walk you through finding out what the name of your network is and how we will go about changing it to something that you can identify quickly.

Hello,

There are many reasons why this might be happening.. You could try the following steps..

1) Disconnect the power from router for a minute and reconnect and check.
2) Try changing the wireless channel and Network name and try re-connecting.
3) Check if there is an firmware update for your product and update if any update is available.
4) If none of the above steps work you will need to reset and re-config your router. ( For that you need the CD given with the router and you will need the ISP settings.)

Hope this helped

How do I set a password on my Linksys wireless-g so that my neighbor can't access my internet?

Hello,

To block your neighbor from using your internet you will have to enable the security settings on your router. First you need to log into the router, most routers will be at 192.168.0.1 Open your browser and type the address in as you would type a web page. Login and go to the Wireless tab, There you will find wireless security settings tab, click it. Under this section you can choose either WPA or WPA2, the second is much more secure. When you select either setting you will be asked to provide a WPA shared key. You can enter any phrase or word you want here. Save your settings and the router will be secure. Next thing to do is setup your wireless machines to use the WPA Key. Do do this step you will need to click on the wireless icon in the lower right corner of the screen on your wireless laptop or desktop. Scan for wireless access points, click on your access point and it will ask for the WPA Key. Enter the same key you just put in the router and click connect. You should now be securely connected and your neighbor will be locked out unless the know your WPA Key.

I hope this works, if so please rate our solution.

The wrieless connection does not hold; the ethernet connection is the only reliable access to the internet. We downloaded driver updates, but the problem continues...even if we are two feet away

Do a wireless scan on your computer and out how many wireless access is in your neighborhood. More than likely that your router is sharing the same wireless channel number as your neighbor's. Go to your router and cheange to opposite of what your neighbor is on.

I have a linskys wireless G access point. Its working for my laptop but just recently my laptop said that my interent secuirty is secuirty enabled and that linkys is a unsecure network. What do I do? It...

jpconda - you did nothing wrong.
By changing your SSID, your connection broke, because you were still associated with your old SSID (linksys).
Right-click on your wireless network connection symbol in your taskbar and choose "View Available Wireless Networks". If you broadcast your SSID, you should see your new name in the list.
Just connect to it (and hopefully enter the security key..;-).
If you don't see it, go to 192.168.1.1 and enable the broadcast of your SSID ( on the Wireless Tab - Basic Wireless Settings). Don't forget to save your changes!
Once your are connected, you can disable the broadcast again, if you don't want someone else to "see" your network.

My pc will not access my new wireless router

Hi there, and welcome to FixYa.
You have got yourself a very friendly neighbor, but give him/here coffee, not access to your network.
- what you have to do, is to find the reset button on the back of the router, press and hold for about 5 seconds with power on, and you have reset it to factory standard.
DO SET THE ADMIN password as the first thing you do, so that your neighbor can’t access your router anymore.

Give your network a network name so that you can find yours if there is more around you. Network name are called SSID, short for service set identifier
Now, go to Wireless -> Wireless connection, to set the Encryption security settings.
Set security mode to WEP,
Set the Transmit key to your choice, if you know that you wireless card has 4 keys as well, I would use key 4.
Set WEP encryption to: 128 bit 26 hex digits.
Go down to key 4, and find a combination of numbers and the letters a, b and c.
(ex. 414243444546474849404a4b4c) = 26 hex digits.
Save settings.
Now, before you leave, WRITE DOWN your SSID, your new password and key 4 with your settings, as you need to set your wireless card with the same settings.
Start -> settings -> network and right click your wireless connection and click properties.
At the top, choose Wireless network, find your network, (your SSID) choose properties and set these settings as you wrote down from the router.

Now, remove the cable and logo on wireless…..

DO NOT REMEMBER SSID NAME GIVEN TO ROUTER WRT54GS---LOST PRINTED COPY OF SET-UP. HOW CAN I REPRINT OR JUST FIND OUT INFO

You can see the SSID name from one of your wireless computer that is already connected to the wireless network. Just point your name over the wireless little computer icon down at bottom right hand by the time. It will say there "Wireless Network Connection, Connected to "name of the network". That "name of the network" is the wireless signal name like "Linksys" or whatever name you gave to your network when you setup the router. That's the SSID name as well. Wireless Network Name = SSID.
