500 GB WD external hard drive not mounting

My 500 GB WD studio edition external hard drive no longer mounts to my desktop (Apple Powerbook G4). I had it for only 3 months. It turns on and runs properly and when I check it's status in Disk Utility it shows up fine but I can't get it to mount. I have about 50 gigs worth of photographs on it and I desperately need to access some of the files A.S.A.P. Please help.

I have the same problem, 250G. Looked on the website, it said power up external and computer, plug external then computer after both up and running -- but that didn't work. It's own software does nto seem to think it's plugged in. I've tried two different cables which work in other devices ...

I have a Western Digital My Book Studio Edition 750GB external hard drive that I am using on Windows XP and it has a similar problem. When I start up, the drive's partitions show up just fine. However, if I leave the computer long enough for it to go to sleep, I often come back to find that either the WD's partitions have all disappeared, or that the partitions still appear in My Computer, but they do not show any files within them.

I bought this thing to store my iTunes music library on, but whenever the WD drive fails to mount, my iTunes Library file becomes corrupted. I can't count on this thing at all as a usable storage device, because I can never be sure when it is going to be freaking out on me.

When I "wake" the computer in the AM, the drive is not up. It will not start unless it is unplugged (power/computer). I have this with USB2 and Firewire connections. I also lost all the partitions one time with this error. Not comforting for a backup drive.

I have a 500Gig MyBook, and it worked fine for about a year or so. I have it connected to my MacBook by a firewire cable, but for the past month or so, it no longer mounts. I thought at first it was my firewire cable, but I tried it on my friend's MacBook Pro and it mounted onto his laptop. When I look at Disk Utility, it can see the drive, but it won't let me mount or do anything to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have the same problem and been like this for 1yr now. The only way to get my files are i use Search and Recover program and search for lost partitions then mount it.

How do i back up a power book g4? What application do I need to do the back up?

If you want a stand alone backup solution, you can download a free program called "Carbon Copy Cloner" and purchase a USB 2.0 external hard drive. You can use the CCC software to backup the entire contents of your Powerbook's hard drive or just selected files to the external USB hard drive.

If your Powerbook is unable to boot into OS X and you need to recover the files that are on the internal hard drive, you can boot the Powerbook into "Target Disk Mode" and transfer the files via firewire cable to another Mac. To do this do the following.
  1. With both Macs off connect them with a firewire cable.
  2. Turn on the Powerbook and hold down the "T" during startup.
  3. Once the large icon shows up on screen your in "TDM".
  4. Turn on the other Mac and login to your account.
  5. The Powerbook's hard drive should mount on your desktop.
  6. You'll be able to transfer your files from the Powerbook's hard drive just like you would an external hard drive, thumb drive, etc.

How to save data from hard drive off my apple power book g4

You can drag and drop your files on to an external hard drive or USB flash drive, burn the files to CD/DVD using an application called toast - you will need a CD/DVD writer to do that. If you can find one, you can save your files to a zip disk.

500 gB doesn't respond to anything!

Leave it unplugged for a minute or so and see if it boots up.
Check the Power supply if it still works.
