MIC PLAYBACK IS NOT COMING OUT TO THE SPEAKERS

HELLO, i have a new toshiba with vista install. I'm pluging the mic, and it records but you can not hear anything coming out to the speakers when you are talking through the mic. I went to sounds,Speakers, playback, levels, but it only shows the levels of the speakers but not the mic.
same in the levels of the microphone icon. I don't know what else to do.
thank you in advance for your help.
