Question about Computers & Internet
I had the same problem as you on my Acer aspire 5000. Turned out there was fluff on the hibernation switch. Once I 'de-fluffed' it the switch popped back out and hey presto my backlight started working again.

If your laptop screen is dark, it could be the backlight, inverter, or bad lcd. You can test the backlight by starting the laptop and give it a few seconds to load and take the laptop in a dark room and shine a flashlight on the lcd and see if you can see any pictures or icons. If you can, you may just need an inverter to correct the issue, If not, you may need to replace the inverter and lcd both.
If you find that you need parts to correct the issue. I would suggest that you begin with replacing the inverter first, as they are usually less expensive.
If you can supply me with the model number of the specific laptop you are having trouble with and I can try to locate more information on replacing the parts.
