i have a swann dvr-4 alert recorder . when i try to play back it says hard drive fail. how can i fix it?

Do not buy swann products. I bought a new swann dvr4-alert complete system, and it did not work. Said no hard drive. I contacted the Swann 800 number and talked with their tech who said it was out of warrenty and to buy a new hard drive. So I bought a new hard drive and the same thing. I was going to buy the same main box again until I found this site and read about all of these other people having the same problem! I'm going to purchase another brand!

The internal power supply to the HDD is often suspect in these units. Check you have power on the internal plug to the HDD from the circuit board. if you do not Try fitting an external HDD power supply (£15) this cured my unit which had a similar fault.
Hope this helps - good luck.

If the hard-drive (HDD) is not being detected, follow these steps to try and get it working…

Firstly, check that the power supply you are using is correct. If your DVR came in a kit with cameras; it should come with 2 or more power supplies (a/c adapters).
Sometimes customers will use the camera power supply to power the DVR, this will cause the HDD to not be detected.
Make sure the power supply connected to the DVR is correct (Try swapping the one used to power the cameras with the one used to power the DVR)

If the HDD is still not detected, you may need to open the case of the DVR to check that all the cables are correctly connected to the HDD.

Unplug the DVR from power, unscrew the necessary screws, and remove the casing of the DVR.

Unplug the 2 cables from the back of the HDD, and check that all the pins are intact and not broken or bent.

Check that the jumper settings on the hard-drive (located between the 2 cables) are set to MASTER.
Instructions for setting to MASTER are located on the top of the HDD on the information.

Now reconnect both cables firmly into the back of the HDD.

Place the case back on the DVR and plug the power cable back into the DVR.

The HDD should now be detected.

If it is still not detected, the HDD may be faulty, or may not be compatible with the DVR.

Swann swdvr 41425-h does not turn on when plugged in

there should be a on and off switch on the back or side or front. It doesn't run only if you turn on switch then you have to put the password in to open it up. Did you read the book. Just call the number on the book and they will help you. I have a Q-see so I don't know what it looks like I hope this help you or if you found a switch and still doesn't work take it back. The Q-see work right out of the box.

Red and green lights blink but why is there nothing on screen?

The voltage from the power adapter is critical for proper operation. If it's a little low, the lights will work, but not the picture. There are capacitors on the motherboard that fail with age, so check them too.

Suddenly the hard drive has died and its telling us that there is no HDD to write to so carnt record. Could someone recommend a course of action or is it simply buying a new drive? if so where is the best...

Probably the best course of action would be to replace the hard drive but first you would need to find out what type of interface the hard drive is. For example IDE or SATA.
Look at the pictures below, these are 2 1/2ins laptop hard drives. Your hard drive will no doubt be 3 1/2 ins desktop type hard drives but the interfaces are the same.

I'm fairly certain that the drive in the recorder will be IDE but you will have to check this yourself.
The cost of a new hard drive is not that much these days but i would replace the hard drive with of the same capacity that was in the recorder. 80GB for example.
The cost will be between $40-$60.

No Files

You must use the unit to play back. You are supposed to connect directly to television or other type of monitor. I do beleive you might need a password or something to view recordings. I am not sure but i do beleive you cannot remove hard drive and connect to a pc to view files they have to be run through the units software. I hope this helps.
