the Nintendo wii is a glorified dvd player with a few major exceptions. it sounds like the units optical pickup has dust or debris on it. try the
Wii Lens Cleaning Kit at amazon for 10 bucks. very common and simple fix.

Don't have a fix for you, but I will tell you we're going through the same thing. It's really sucking the joy out of the game for us. We just quit playing because it's more frustrating than fun. Tried Nintendo's 800 number, but they were "currentlly experiencing a high call volume" and I was told by an automated voice to call again some other time. Really don't know what the fix would be, seeing as how I feel like we've done everything possible to solve it - just as you said. Please post here if you find a fix!

Wii unable to read gamecube disc... :(

If Wii gives Disc Read Error, first step you need to check is to try another disc or clean the exisitng disc. This will confirm that problem is with either Wii or Disc. If the console itself is giving disc read error then it needs to be repaired. You may check out DIY Wii Fix Guide, that will show step by step information to fix the problem yourself. It also gives information on fixing many Wii Related Problems, so its a kind of Wii Problems Reference Fix Guide

Wii will do everything but it won't play games.....

I had the same problem. No new games would play but the old games played fine. I clicked on the spinning disc icon (where the game should come up) and it prompted me to do an update. I accepted. Once the update was complete (took about a minute or 2) the new games worked fine.
