Brother MFC 9600

I have a Brother MFC 9600 that has a "check scan lock" error. The scanner is unlocked. I hit the "off" button, and it shows "machine error AF" the scanner moves a little bit when the power comes on or when I hit the "stop" button. When the scanner gets to the end, it will not reverse. The motor will still run, but the gears will make a stripping noise against the belt

It has been unplugged for more than 15 minutes several times & has not reset

  • keutzer Aug 25, 2008

I have also toggled the lock switch & this has not helped

  • keutzer Aug 29, 2008

When I press the 'stop' button, the scanner advances ~ 1/2", then beeps. This tells me the motor & gears appear to be working. Is there some type of sensor that is supposed to be telling it if it is in the home position or the other end?

Hi,

Based on your post, the Brother MFC 9600 is installed correctly (drivers), the scanner is unlocked and that you hear the gears and motor turning, it would seem that the concern is a mechanical issue.

This of course would require opening the unit and performing a DIY (do-it-yourself). Should you be uncomfortable, then perhaps the services of a qualified professional is required.

If you are considering a DIY, your best source of information would be the service manual which details parts placement, disassembly instructions all other pertinent information.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Go to the owners manual page 25 and read the warnings there about this error. If you do not have the manual you can download it at http://www.brother-usa.com/Support/Default.aspx.

Do not do anything else until you have read this and can make an informed decision.

Good luck to you and thank YOu for using FixYa. Your rating is always appreciated.

Try to uninstall and reinstall your device. see the settings and see if somethings bothering on operating. if problem persist then you might need a technician to do this by using their tools and change some parts of it.

Remove the scanner portion by removing the screws properly.and then check the back of the gears if something is blocking the gears,if yes then remove the blockage . and apply greece on the gears to make it run fluently with the belt attached to it.also check the belt.if it is damaged some where it will not run backwards properly.also remove the white colour cable strips and re-insert for proper connection.if still it does not work.then definately its the problem of faulty scanner.as its circuit is short somewhere.get it repaired.it would not be to costly.thanks.
pls do rate the solution

thanks.

the scanner moves and then stops means the motor is ok.but its the definate problem of improper white calibration strip located behind the glass from where the scanner starts moving. the problem what your scanner is showing is not repairable you have to replace your upper scanner unit to make the scanner work.i will suggest you to get new printer.instead of replacing the scanner.as the replacement will be very much costly.near to new printer.

Try doing this steps for this problem

1) Remove the scanner lid / auto sheet feeder by undoing the two latches and the cabling at the back
2) With a small flat screw driver remove the 'L' shaped plastic above the memory card slots , this will come off to the left. You will unfortunately end up slightly scratching and denting the platic.
3) Remove the control panel face plate and unclip and remove the control panel too, this will come lose to the left. leave the cabling intact.
4) I think now you will be able to get through to all 4-6 torx screws in order to lift off the glass.
5) You'll see the screw on your left towards the front which holds down the scanner pulley. Be careful not to lose the spring inside and undo the screw noting down how tought the screew is fixed in place. Further to the left, the tighter it is. Undo this screw to make the scanner 'head' free.
6) Carefully lift the scanner up about 45 degrees. Move the scanner 'head' towards the left about half way , away from the lock. Slide the lock FULLY to the 'unlock' position and ensure it's not jammed or impeding anything else.
7) Sit the scanner 'head' back down properly if it has come off the tubular track.
8) Re-assembly the screw holding the track ensuring it's as tought as before.
9) Re-assembly the rest of the unit.

Hope that helps.......

Turn the unit OFF then toggle the scanner lock a few times and set it to the unlock position.

Still doesn't work ? the unit needs service/replacement.

Scanner Lock switch is busted - you can try to disassemble the scanner to fix the switch or check your warranty for replacement.

    Release the Scanner Lock
Push the blue Scanner Lock Lever up to unlock the scanner.
This lever is located on the rear left underside of the scanner cover.

What is machine error 71 How to fix it?

Error 71 on a MFC-9600 means there is a problem with the motor inside the printer.
You can try unplugging and waiting a few minutes, then plugging back in again.
If it is still coming up with the error, if its still under warranty Brother will replace/repair it for you, otherwise you will have to pay Brother for the repair cost.

My mfc 9600 shows machine error 76 can you explain the fault

That tells you either the wires to the fuser are un-plugged, or the fuser is burned out. Most likely you need a new fuser.

Machine error AE on brother MFC 6800

The error is from the scanner. It is possible the scanner lock on the underside of the scanner has shifted and not allowing the scanner to correctly return to the home position. Try Checking the scanner lock and make sure it is not in the locked position. Then turn off and on your machine while holding the menu/set button. the machine will come up either with an error or in maintenance mode. either way enter 99 and see what you get. Maintenance mode is a dangerous place to play around in. 99 exits maintenance mode. 91 resets all parameters to factory setting except stored locations like phone numbers and location information. 01 resets every thing to factory. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING IN MAINTENANCE MODE. CCDHP is scanner home position sensor. It will probably reset just by turning the machine off and on.
good luck.

Machine Error AF

plz check the flat cables silver ends! It might be that the flat cable has a broken cable. Clean contact on main board and flatcable side with some electrical cleaning solution.

But i guess you have a broken cable.

AF only appears when scanner is not connected to machines circuit board. In case you wont find a broken cable, buy a second hand dcp 110c and use this scanner as a spare-part.

Brother MFC-240C init. unable AF error message

Sure. No prob.

Open scanner cover as you would do to check for a paper jammed sheet.

Do open the plastic which runs from middle to the right side (looks like a "Z" turned clockwise). Use a small screw diver for that. beneath you will find th flat cable of the scanner. You have to reconnect the flat cable by simply sticking it into position onto the main circuit board. make sure flat cable is in good position and click the" Z  "onto the channel. Close cover then power up and do what ever you want to do with your mfc ;-)

AF after cleaning cycles??????????????????????????

AF means that the scanner flatcable is not connected to the main pcb (When powering up you should hear a grinding sound from the scanner area). Open the scanner cover as for changing the ink carts. Open the small cover (looks like a " L ") and connect the white flat cable simply by pushing it into the main pcb.

Open the small cover that hides the scanner flat cable. It has to be reconnected to the main pcb.
