Absolutely no sound from the computer at all and yet the sound test says everything is working properely... have gone on the net to try to fix with no luck

did you check to see if the speakers are muted, Go to the little speaker icon in the tray (toward the right), left click on it and open the "mixer", you should be able to see if the sound is muted there. If it isn't muted, try plugging in some earphone and play some music or something you know works on your computer. If you hear sound from the earphones, then you know your sound fuction is ok and that the problem may be the spearkers ( if this is a laptop, you could still have a spearer problem, but more difficult to fix) hope this helps.

I have a dell computer that runs windows xp. im not a complete idiot but im not very computer savvy. I was messing around a few weeks ago trying to clean up my system from the previuos owners stuff . i...

Many Dell PCs have an internal speaker that will allow sounds and even music to play - it is just not as good as the external types that offer sub woofers and stereo sound. As long as you're hearing the familiar Windows Sounds and not simple beeps - your sound card drivers are probably ok.

This makes me think that you've either inserted the speaker plug into the wrong jack on the PC or have an issue with the speakers themselves. Generally, these jacks are color coded. If yours are, make sure that speakers are connected to the GREEN jack. If not color coded there should be an indication of an arrow pointing OUT or a speaker icon near the speaker jack. If still no luck, it is possible that the cord between the plug and the speakers has gotten pinched or broken. Try plugging a pair oh head phones into the jack - or plug the speakers into another device with a speaker jack. I'm pretty sure you'll get your answer after doing that. Some final thoughts: Maybe your speakers need power? Are they plugged in? Is the outlet powered? Is there a power indicator? Is the volume knob turned to minimum?

If you still have problems - provide the model number of your Dell PC and we can dig some more - but I think you'll find the problem if you follow the steps above.

I hope this was Very Helpful - and good luck!

Go to control panel > sounds and audio devices and have a look in there or click on the advanced button for the audio mixer. in the mixer, go to options > properties and select all the devices, close that and then turn up the volume on the mixer.

Sound Card

you may need to access the computer's manufacturer website to download the sound drivers. another way you could try is to click Start > Run > type devmgmt.msc and hit <Enter> to open device manager

go to the Sound section and expand it --- then highlight the device and right click and then select Update Driver.

Audio problem

Do you get the volume control speaker icon in the taskbar bottom right of the screen.
If so double click it and the mixer should popup.
Make sure none of the items in it are Muted, or the levels sliders are not at the bottom.

If not go to Control panel on the Start menu. Then click on the
Sound and Audio Devices icon. When the box pops up have a look to see if the option to Place volume icon in the taskbar is ticked or greyed out (not clickable).
If it's not clickable then there is usually no sound device installed.
If that is the case you should check in the Bios to make sure the On Board Audio is Enabled. The way to get in to the Bios varies from computer to computer.
Usually you press F2 or the Delete key just as the computer starst up and before it loads Windows.
The On Board Audio setting is in the Integrated Devices or Integrated Peripherals section or similar.
If it's Disabled just change setting to Enable or Auto.
Save changes and Exit, then it will reboot.

If it's not any of them then it may just be a matter of reinstalling the Audio Drivers.
Find the make and model number of the machine and have a look on the manufacturers website. They usually have all the drivers and manuals.
