HP Printer HP 3940 - disk worked well with Windows XP, cannot get it hooked up to new laptop running Vista. Disk won't work and neither does plug and play. Printer apparently installed, but nothing happens. Can't uninstall either and start again, and default printer is XPS (which doesn't exist). Can't change the default printer to the HP 3940 (which is less than a year old!). Would be grateful for detailed help and idiot's guide!!

The hard disk from the laptop has died - something to be expected on a laptop this old.
Extremely easy to fix - just buy a new hard disk, put it in the laptop and install whatever version of Windows you like.

I have a new laptop which is windows vista, the disk that came with my HP 2355 all in one only works for xp, how do I work around this and be able to reload the disk so I can use my printer/scanner

Most drivers in XP will work in Vista. Even though it says p on the disk try installing it and see if it works. If not you need to go to the HP website click on support and pt in the model of your printer and download the new drivers if available.

Vista cannot connect to xp printer

It sounds like your are using your Windows XP computer as the print server, and you are trying to connect your Windows Vista machine to the Windows XP print server. Your Vista machine is trying to download the XP drivers from the Windows XP computer to your Vista machine. This won't work. Windows XP and Vista print drivers are not compatible.

If the printer is truely networked (it has it's own IP address on the network, it has its own ethernet connection). Then instead of trying to map out to this shared printer, add new printer to the Vista machine using Vista drivers for the HP Deskjet 3940. The type of port you would need is a standard TCP/IP port. To get this address, print a settings page from the printer. Look for either a TCP/IP address or IP address on this print out. This is the port address you want to create and then connect to.

HP6210 all in one set-up won't work on Vista System Laptop

Did you get an error when installing,or did it install. What happened when you plunged in the printer
when the software told you to plug it in, did windows say found new hardware and you let it install a windows driver or did you shut down the window so it would install the hp driver.
Go to start, control panel, programs, look and see if the hp software is listed,if not it did not install,
try it again.
With the hp printer plugged into your laptop, go to devise mgr and look under portable device,it should
show your printer model#, rt click on the model # and then on driver, does it say hp or windows,if it says
windows then the hp driver did not get installed, put in the disk, then click on update driver and pick browse computer, and point it to the disk.

HP has a vista driver for your printer, so you need to check the set up info that came with it to see
if the vista driver in on the disk. You can always just download the driver software from HP,pick the vista
one and install it. But make sure that the software is removed from the program list if it was in there before you install again. Hope it works out, its very hard to cover everything so if any more Q's
just post back.
