We are experiencing a problem with our UVW-1800 sony Beta SP deck. After blacking a tape it rewound automatically and when we pushed eject the tape jammed inside (tape as expected was off the head and wound back inside the cassette with cassette door open) and did not eject. The error message in the display read "Error20-911". We removed the front panel and manually turned the yellow gear on the inside right which brought the tape up and out of the machine. Now when we insert the tape the mechanism will not engage and we get a "21-1C1" error and then after about 15 seconds the error changes to "20-111"
Question (s): Has anyone experienced similar problems, does anyone know what the error messages mean and or is there a sony site that lists these messages meanings?

It amazes me that not a single person actually bothered to answer the poor guy's question before posting their stuff.
Anyway: some of the error messages will be explained to you by the machine when looking at a monitor connected to the SUPER video out, you know, the one you normally use when making window dubs. Make sure you have the character switch on. This will give you at least a basic message of what sort of error you're dealing with. Beyond that, maybe calling on a repair guy who deals with UVW-1800 would give you more information. I can put you in touch with one if you don't mind making a long-distance phone call.

When you remove the top lid, you will find instructions for freeing a jammed tape or at least pointers on accessing the instructions. As I recall it's something like prssing the left arrow and the menu button similtaneously to access the maintenence/service menu. It then asks you questions about your tape jam and depending on your yes/no answers, the machine performs self-diagnostics and prompts you what to do next. Eric Tausch, Editech

I've heard that Ampex tapes have been trashing mechanisms in 1800s. Perhaps that's your problem?

I hadn't heard that Doug, but will keep it in mind. We're using Fuji M321SP 30's and 20's.
