Lines across top of screen

It seemed to have no effect when I unplugged the tv and then plugged it back in, both with and without the set on. it starts with the lines just below the top of the screen in the rainbow colors, then changes to the clear or white lines when the picture comes up. One more thing, the lines do not appear when commercials are on the screen!

Does this help with the troubleshooting?

The unplugging did not work, and I do not find any adjustments I can make on my own. Any suggestions

The lines and rainbow colors you see at the top of the screen are most likey caused by macro-vision copy protection on the signal satellite and cable companies inject in the vertical blanking lines that are usually above the visual area of your screen. As you say the lines do not appear when commercials are playing is because they do not copy protect the commercials. Normally TV's do not get disturbed by this signal but some sets with sensitive tuners have a problem with this macro-vision signal which display the exact symptoms you are describing. The fact that the distortion is not there during the commercial assures me this is your problem. To fix this all you need is a video stabilizer. It removes the macro-vision signal so it can no longer interfere with your reception. As an added perk it will also allow you to record the shows that you have paid for to dvd as this signal also prevents DVD recorders from functioning while this signal is present. It is illegal to use this device to copy rented DVD's but you are legally allowed to make backup copies of DVD you own so that you can keep the originals safe and free from damage under the Fair Use Act. Anyway, Here is a link to a source that is reliable and has the best price and warranty:

http://www.qualitekindustries.com/noname.html

Cut and paste this address into the address bar on your internet browser and it will take you right to the site. The one you need is the one on the top left unit that is $49.95 . This will clear up your interference problem for sure. You can test my logic if you hook up your camcorder to the set and play back video that you recorded. You know there is no copy protection on that signal, You would actually have to pay the macro-vision company to put it on your video's and I'm sure you don't do that unless your a Hollywood movie maker. When you hook up your video camera and the mysterious lines and rainbow's don't show up You will know for sure what I am telling you is the right answer. Anyway, If you find this information useful and It takes care of your problem please come back to rate this a fixya for me. It would be greatly appreciated. Now go get you camera hooked up and test what I just told you about and make sure it's the cause of your problem. If it is Order up a video stabilizer from the link and enjoy interference free video. If you have any other questions feel free to post them and I will answer any of your concerns,
George

Did anyone read that the problem is not present when commercials are playing. Commercials do not have macrovision protection, the cause of this exact problem. Please stop telling this poor customer to solder things in their Tv when there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. And who the heck is rating stupid questions as the best answer. I'm sure it wasn't the paying customer. Jesus people are going to stop comming to our site if they keep getting retarded solutions thrown at them.

Highland Electrix TV Repair Advice lo300v PageMost of all intermittant faults are caused by bad solder joints
some are plain to see, but some look perfect take some time and resolder all the joints in an area you think most likely.
things like Transformers , have an effect called MagnetoStriction,
which is where the metalic body expands and contracts each time it is magnetized.
With things like a TV transformer they are magnetized at least 15k times a second.
So resolder around these areas first and also any areas that look as though they have been getting hot ( Brown/dark pcb areas).
All joints should look shiny and smooth

TV TURNS ON,LINES ACROSS SCREEN THEN TURNS OFF BY ITSELF

sounds like a vertical problem, usually you'll see one white line across the screen, but one I worked on would come on and the bottom half of the picture was gone and there were lines across the top of the screen.

If you know how to solder & can find the vertical output chip then you could try resoldering the pins. If this doesn't fix it then it needs new parts.

This is usually caused by bad capacitors in the vertical circuit. If you have an electronics background you should be able to find the defective ones with an ESR tester .

Rows of Lines across top of screen

I decided not to repair, but use the 16:9 feature on the remote control.
a kind of letterbox look, not bad at all.

I'n not going to spend money, replacing the vertical output ic circuit's bad capacitor or vertical power supply for bad cap.
