IBM Thinkpad I tried what you said about changing user name and password, but it said the system could not log me on. Make sure you User anme and domain are correct then type your password again. I clicked on F8 before I typed administrator and new password. It did not look like anything happened. Do I turn on the pad and once my log on to windows box appears click F8? I am clueless as you can tell about computers.

When you first start the machine, start pressing F8. It should go into safe mode. Safe mode looks different than the regular Windows mode, and there will be a screen with user account boxes, just like when you logged off in Windows. One box will have administrator, another will have whoever had the computer before, and there may be another with guest. Click on the administrator box, then open user accounts from the control panel. Then you can open the user account with the password and clear it. If you still can't get to safe mode let me know and we'll try a forceful way.

IBM R40 HOW ICAN UNLOCK THE PASSWORD

Hi,

This is only possible is you are using Windows XP. If your operating system is windows Xp, follow the steps below:

  1. Turn on your laptop and allow it get to the stage where is will ask for user/log password
  2. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del your keyboard.
  3. A user name and password prompt will pop up.
  4. On the user name type in "administrator
  5. On the password, type in "administrator"
  6. and you windows will open, go to control panel from there to change the password.
That's all. In other words, the user name and password is administrator.

But in the case of windows Vista, you will have to re-run windows operating system, because vista security is very tight and its difficult to break into its password.

Take care

Hi I just got a used Thinkpad T60, and is requesting a password. Can you tell me how to change that

Try booting up in Safe Mode. Log in as administrator (try 'password' as the password), then open control panel (start>settings>control panel). Open the User Management tool, select the user that you want change and click change password. If you want to create a new user you can do that here to. Be sure to make the new user an Admin.

Supervisor password

A Supervisor password protects the system information stored in the BIOS. The user must enter the Supervisor password in order to get access to the ThinkPad BIOS Setup Utility in order to change the system configuration. If the Supervisor password is forgotten there is no way to reset it to enter the BIOS configuration. Setting a Supervisor password automatically sets the master Hard drive password. The following is the icon that comes up in the upper left corner if a Supervisor password is set:
A forgotten Supervisor password will prevent access to the ThinkPad BIOS setup utility. To regain access, the system will need to be serviced to have the system board and hard drive replaced. Proof of purchase is required, and this repair is not covered under the warranty.

try starting the machine in safe mode. (tap the "F8" key while booting, and select safe mode.) When the welcome screen comes up, there is often a user called Administrator and it most often does not have a password. If you don't use the welcome screen type "Administrator" in the user name box and click OK without a password.
Failing that, you can use a boot disc such as "UBCD4Win"(google it) to start up the machine and use one of the pass word tools to either change the password or create a new user with a new password. Then when you restart the machine normally, you should be able to log on.
